PM Modi takes oath on Saturday

Dear Readers

PM Modi takes oath on Saturday after receiving written endorsement from C Naidu and Nitish Kumar The Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance, which won 293 seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, surpassing its 272-seat majority, will be inaugurated on April 4, 2020. The government will be inaugurated on Saturday with Narendra Modi sworn in as prime minister for a historic third consecutive term, officials told NDTV on Wednesday. Modi was unanimously elected alliance leader this afternoon and congratulated him for his "leadership" and "the progress our country has made under him". They also appreciated his hard work and nation-building efforts. The NDA partners said Modi has a vision for a "Vikshit Bharat" and will remain partners in pursuing this goal. They praised his role in strengthening India's standing in the world.

The delegation should include Telugu Desam Party chief Chandrababu Naidu and Janata Dal chief Nitish Kumar, who together need 28 seats to keep the BJP coalition government afloat.

Naidu's TDP won 16 Lok Sabha seats in Andhra Pradesh (as well as the parliamentary elections to return him as chief minister) and Nitish Kumar's JDU won 12 seats in Bihar. There was speculation that Naidu and Nitish Kumar could be approached by the opposition India Bloc, which would win 232 seats (40 short of a majority) and is considering forming a government.

To counter this, the BJP has secured written letters of support from the leaders of the TDP and the JDU.

Prime Minister Modi and the BJP are well aware of the importance of this to the NDA. During his victory speech at the party headquarters in Delhi on Tuesday evening, he specifically mentioned leaders of the TDP and JDU.

NDA leaders met at PM Modi's official residence today to review the election results and discuss forming a government, after which a senior delegation from the Bharatiya Janata Party and its NDA partners was scheduled to meet President Dhruv Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan in a bid to seize power.

Netanyahu says Israel ‘prepared for very intense operation’ near Lebanon

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says Israel is “prepared for a very intense operation” along its border with Lebanon, where Israeli troops have exchanged near daily fire with Hezbollah fighters for almost eight months.

The fighting between Israel and the Lebanese armed group, a Hamas ally, has intensified over the past week, with Israel striking deeper into Lebanese territory, raising concerns that an even wider conflict could break out between the heavily armed adversaries.

“We are prepared for a very intense operation in the north. One way or another, we will restore security to the north,” Netanyahu said during a visit to the border area.

Hezbollah said later that it launched several attacks on Israeli positions during the day, including a “guided missile” strike on an “Iron Dome platform in the Ramot Naftali barracks”. Iron Dome is Israel’s air defence system.

Israeli media outlets reported that a Hezbollah drone attack on the northern town of Hurfeish on Wednesday injured at least 10 people, one critically.

In past weeks, Israel has ramped up its targeting of Hezbollah members and allied Palestinian and Lebanese fighters in cars and on motorbikes in Lebanon.

National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, Netanyahu’s far-right coalition partners,  have both called in recent days for immediate action.   “They burn us here, all Hezbollah strongholds should also burn and be destroyed. WAR!” Ben Gvir said on Tuesday in a Telegram post.

Smotrich said on Monday: “We must move the security strip from inside Israeli territory in the Galilee to southern Lebanon, including a ground invasion, occupation of the territory and distancing Hezbollah terrorists and hundreds of thousands of Lebanese among whom Hezbollah hides to the other side of the Litani River,” nearly 30km (20 miles) north of the border.

Israeli Chief of the General Staff Herzi Halevi said on Tuesday that the army was ready to move to an offensive in the north.

“We are prepared after a very good process of training up to the level of a General Staff exercise to move to an offensive in the north,” he said in a recorded statement. “We are approaching a decision point.”

‘Many actors are no longer rational’

Israeli air strikes have pounded areas in southern Lebanon and struck the Bekaa Valley near the Syrian border.

The Israeli attacks have killed about 300 members of Hezbollah since October 7 and about 80 civilians. Strikes from Lebanon on Israel have killed 18 Israeli soldiers and 10 civilians, the Israeli military said.

Lebanese army says gunman attacked US embassy

Lebanese army on Wednesday said that a gunman attempted to attack the U.S. embassy near Beirut. According to the Lebanese military, the attacker was shot dead and was a Syrian national

The Lebanese army said Wednesday a gunman attempted to attack on the U.S. embassy near Beirut.  The Lebanese military in a statement said that soldiers shot an assailant, who they only described as a Syrian national. The gunman was wounded and taken to a hospital.

Local media reported that there was a gunfight for almost half an hour by the U.S. diplomatic mission in the suburb of Aukar, north of Beirut.

The U.S. Embassy said the morning attack by the embassy’s entrance did not cause any casualties among their staff, and that Lebanese troops and embassy security mobilized quickly.

The Lebanese military said it deployed troops around the embassy and surrounding areas.

In 1983, a deadly bombing attack on the U.S. Embassy in Beirut killed 63 people.. U.S. officials blame the attack on the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.  Following that attack, the embassy was moved from central Beirut to the Christian suburb of Aukar, north of the capital. Another bomb attack struck the new location on Sept. 20, 1984.

In September 2023, Lebanese security forces detained a Lebanese man who opened fire by the U.S. Embassy. There were no casualties in that attack.

In October 2023, hundreds of protesters clashed with Lebanese security forces in demonstrations near the U.S. Embassy in support of Gaza’s people and the militant group Hamas in its war with Israel.
