'Her Travels Challenge Income Sources': Authorities Discuss 'Spy' YouTuber Jyoti Malhotra's Visit to Pakistan
YouTuber Jyoti Malhotra's case related to spying for Pakistan has made headlines, highlighting how contemporary warfare can extend beyond traditional combat zones, according to a senior police official from Hisar, Haryana.
There is now increased focus on the role of social media influencers who are capable of operating under the radar.
Additionally, the police official remarked that it is puzzling how Ms. Malhotra's travel expenses could align with her known income sources.
While the majority of Indian citizens traveling to Pakistan face monitoring at the police level and can only go to specific locations outlined in their visa, Ms. Malhotra reportedly enjoyed special privileges because of her connections with Danish, an officer at the Pakistan High Commission, and other intelligence agents. She allegedly received police protection during her visit to Pakistan.
Her YouTube channel 'TravelwithJo' boasts 382,000 subscribers, while her Instagram and Facebook accounts with the same title have 139,000 and 320,000 followers, respectively. She also maintains a website, travelwithjo.in, where she discusses her travels.
"Contemporary warfare doesn't occur solely at borders. We have received information indicating that Pakistani intelligence operatives are attempting to enlist social media influencers to promote their narrative," Hisar Superintendent of Police Shashank Kumar stated during a press briefing.
PIO refers to Pakistani intelligence operatives.
Mr. Kumar shared that Ms. Malhotra was apprehended following information from central agencies regarding her involvement, including communication with Pakistani intelligence officials.
"We got alerts from central agencies, leading to the arrest of Jyoti Malhotra. She has made several trips to Pakistan and one to China, maintaining contact with PIOs. We have taken her into custody for five days. We are reviewing her financial records and interactions, as well as the people she met. She remained in contact with PIOs during the conflict... Her travel arrangements contradict her verified income," Mr. Kumar informed the press, referring to the unrest triggered by Pakistan-aligned terrorists who attacked 26 tourists in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, followed by India's targeted missile responses against terrorist infrastructure.
