NDA's Om Birla wins Rare Contest For Lok Sabha Speaker

The election also saw a moment of rare bonhomie as Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi walked up to Mr Birla to congratulated him and PM Modi.

Three-time BJP MP Om Birla was elected Lok Sabha Speaker for the second time in a row today after the NDA candidate won the election by a voice vote. The election also saw a moment of rare bonhomie between the treasury and Opposition benches as Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi walked up to Mr Birla to congratulated him and also shook hands with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

As the House applauded Mr Birla on his election, the Prime Minister, the Leader of the Opposition and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju escorted him to the Speaker's chair.

This was only the third election for the Lok Sabha Speaker after Independence. The voting took place after the Congress forced a contest and fielded its eight-time MP K Suresh as a challenger. The numbers, however, were clearly on Mr Birla's side. While the NDA candidate had the support of 297 MPs, the Opposition pick had 232.

The Lok Sabha Speaker is generally chosen with consensus. This time, the government had reached out to Opposition parties for their support. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge had then responded that it will support the NDA candidate if the Deputy Speaker is appointed from the Opposition benches.

The government, however, made it clear that they are not considering a Deputy Speaker post, or the Opposition's claim to it, for now. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said, "We appealed to them for support for the Speaker, but they said that they would support it but that they wanted the post of Deputy Speaker. We told them that the process of election for both posts is different. The process for choosing the Speaker is conducted before the Deputy Speaker. So it is not right to combine both."

The Delhi High Court on Tuesday stayed a trial court's decision to grant bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in a money laundering probe. The ED filed submissions on Monday with the Delhi HC, opposing any relief for Kejriwal in the Excise Policy money laundering case.

AAP will be appealing the stay in the Supreme Court, Kejriwal's representatives said.

"This Court is of the view that the Trial Court has not applied its mind and has not considered the material," the Delhi HC bench of Justice Sudhir Kumar Jain observed. The HC also noted that the trial court failed to appreciate the material placed before it by the investigative agency.

Special Judge Niyay Bindu, who sat as the vacation judge, granted bail to Kejriwal on June 20 in the money laundering case, saying the ED failed to furnish direct evidence linking him to the proceeds of crime in the money laundering case.

ED criticised the trial court's bail decision as illegal and unjust, urging the High Court to nullify it, alleging the trial judge made biased findings without fully reviewing the prosecution's evidence.

Israeli airstrikes kill at least 11 in Gaza as tanks continue to advance towards Rafah

Israeli airstrikes kill at least 11 in Gaza as tanks continue to advance towards Rafah

Israeli forces carried out three separate airstrikes on Gaza City early Tuesday, killing at least 24 Palestinians, as tanks continue to advance towards the southern town of Rafah, health officials said. The enclave deepened.

Two of the attacks hit two schools in Gaza City, killing at least 14 people, medical officials said. Another attack on a house in Shati (Beach) camp, one of eight historic refugee camps in the Gaza Strip, killed another 10 people.

The Shati house belonged to a relative of Qatar-based Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh, whose sister and one other relative were killed, family members and medical officials said.

Haniyeh, who leads Hamas diplomacy and is the public face of the organisation that rules the Gaza Strip, has lost many relatives in Israeli air strikes since October. Seven, including three sons.

The Israeli army said it had taken action overnight in Gaza City against militants linked to plotting attacks on Israel. Some of the activists had taken part in the hostage crisis and a Hamas cross-border attack on October 7.

The Israeli Air Force strikes two buildings "used by Hamas terrorists" in Shatti and Daraj Tufa in the northern Gaza Strip. "The terrorists operated in a schoolyard used by Hamas as a shield for its terrorist activities," the military statement said.

Hamas denies using civilian facilities such as schools and hospitals for military purposes.

More than eight months after the start of fighting, US-backed international mediation bodies have so far failed to reach a ceasefire agreement. Hamas insists any agreement must end the war, while Israel insists it will only agree to a pause in fighting until Hamas is destroyed.

Medicine Shortages

Israeli ground and air strikes in the Gaza Strip were triggered when Hamas-led militants entered southern Israel in October. 7. According to Israeli statistics, about 1,200 people were killed and more than 250 hostages were taken.

According to Palestinian health officials, Israeli retaliatory attacks have killed about 37,600 people and left the small and densely populated Gaza Strip in ruins.

The Gaza Health Ministry said on Tuesday that there is a severe shortage of medicines and medical supplies in the enclave's hospitals and medical centers. The reasons for this are ongoing Israeli attacks, Israel's control and closure of all border crossings, and Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip's health sector.

There is a particular shortage of medicines needed for emergencies, anesthesia, intensive care and surgery, while cancer patients are unable to get to hospitals, the ministry said in a statement.

Since early May, fighting has been concentrated in Rafah, on the southern edge of the Gaza Strip on the border with Egypt, forcing about half of the enclave's 2.3 million residents to flee other areas to find shelter.

BJPs Om Birla takes on Congress' K Suresh for Sabha Speaker post

Bharatiya Janata Party's Om Birla takes on Congress' K Suresh for Sabha Speaker post

As nominations are drawing nearer as the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the opposition United India could not reach an agreement on the term for the Sabha Speaker post and the Speaker of Parliament, the two alliances have nominated their candidates separately. Parliamentarians will vote for the next Speaker when Parliament convenes on June 26. They will have to choose between Bharatiya Janata Party's Om Birla as the NDA candidate and Congress' Kodikunil Suresh as the Opposition candidate.

Three-time MP from Kota Om Birla and K Suresh, the longest serving MP from Kerala, have filed their candidature for the Parliamentary seat. The nomination process will take place today, June 25, and the elections will be held on June 26.

Om Birla vs K Suresh: Who is winning in the 543-member Lok Sabha?

With 293 MPs in the 543-member Lok Sabha, the NDA has a clear majority. The Opposition Bloc has 234 MPs in the Lok Sabha.

The NDA's vote advantage will see Om Birla become Speaker of the Lok Sabha for a second term.

Why did the Opposition field K Suresh?

K Suresh's nomination as the Opposition candidate came after tense discussions between the NDA and India Bloc over the post of Deputy Speaker. He said the India bloc was ready to support the NDA candidate but only if the post of deputy speaker went to the Opposition.

Rahul Gandhi said Defence Minister and senior Bharatiya Janata Party politician Rajnath Singh had called Mallikarjun Kharge to forge an agreement between the two blocs but talks had broken down over the post of deputy speaker.
