Nirmala Sitharaman responds to Mamata Banerjee's ‘mic stopped' claim, 'she should speak truth'
While the government's Press Information Bureau (PIB) on Saturday pursued Mamata Banerjee's claim that her microphone was switched off after she spoke for five minutes at the NITI Aayog meeting, India's Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also criticised the West Bengal Chief Minister.
Banerjee claimed that other chief ministers were allowed to speak for longer. "It's an insult. I will not attend future meetings," she added.
Prime Minister Modi chaired the ninth meeting of the NITI Aayog governing body, with a goal of making India a developed country by 2047.
The Finance Minister added that the claim that her microphone was switched off is completely false.
Reacting to Mamata Banerjee's allegations, Nirmala Sitharaman said: "CM Mamata Banerjee attended the Niti Aayog meeting. We all listened to her. Every CM had an allotted time to speak, which was displayed on a screen placed in front of each table..."
"She has said in the media that every CM had an allotted speaking time...It is unfortunate that the Chief Minister of West Bengal Ms Mamata Banerjee has alleged that her microphone was switched off, which is not true...She should speak the truth instead of reconstructing the story based on falsehoods," Nirmala Sitharaman told ANI.
The government rejected Ms Banerjee's allegations and said that her speaking time has ended.
PIB Fact Check, in a post on X, said the claim that Banerjee's microphone was switched off was "misleading". "The clock was just indicating that her time to speak was up," it said.
The TMC leader said there was nothing wrong with them (the government) giving special consideration to some states. Ms Banerjee asked, "Why do we discriminate against other states? This needs to be checked. I speak on behalf of all states." I said they only give instructions but we are to work,"
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin spoke out in support of the West Bengal Chief Minister.
"Is this cooperative federalism? Is this the attitude towards the Prime Minister? The BJP coalition government needs to understand that the Opposition is an integral part of our democracy and should not be treated like an enemy that must be silenced," he said in a post on X.
"Cooperative federalism requires dialogue and respect for all voices," Stalin added.

US Senator Rubio introduces bill to ally with India, penalise Pakistan
The “United States-India Defense Cooperation Act of 2024” requires the US Secretary of State to report instances of Pakistan using offensive force against India, providing safe havens to terror groups, and aiding militants in Jammu and Kashmir.
Treat India as an ally, punish Pakistan on terror: Marco Rubio introduces legislation to deepen ties.
Marco Rubio, a powerful Republican Senator from Florida who was in the running to be Donald Trump’s running mate, has proposed a legislation that bats for deeper India-US defence ties in response to “growing threats” to India’s borders, calls for expeditious delivery of defence equipment to India, and asks the US administration to effectively treat India as an ally when it comes to technology transfer.
The proposed legislation, titled “United States-India Defense Cooperation Act of 2024”, also mandates the US Secretary of State to track and report all instances in which Pakistan has used “offensive force, including the use of proxies” against India, provided safe havens to terror groups, and the assistance Pakistan has provided to militants in “the Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir”.
The trigger for the proposed law is the shared threat from China. "Communist China continues to aggressively expand its sphere of influence in the Indo-Pacific while seeking to undermine the sovereignty and autonomy of our regional partners," Rubio said in a statement. It is important that the United States continue to assist in combating these malign tactics. In its policy statement, the
bill proposes that U.S. policy should be directed toward supporting India "in response to growing threats to our internationally recognized land and maritime borders." It would provide India with security assistance necessary to "deter actions by foreign actors" that violate those borders, and support cooperation with India in the areas of "defense, civil space, technology, health care, and economic investment."

SNCF said it "wants to ensure that all participants and Olympic confirmed that "those who qualify" will be guaranteed to travel to their destinations.
Two-thirds of the high-speed trains connecting Paris to the west and south of France will depart as planned, while 80 percent of high-speed trains in northern France will continue to run.

Train sabotage won’t impact Olympic opening ceremony: Paris mayor
Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo said the arson attack on the railway “will not impact the Paris Olympic opening ceremony”.

Past President Trump meets Netanyahu amid protests
"We never spoke, it's bullshit": After years of abuse, Trump meets with Netanyahu amid protests Former President Donald Trump's relationship with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu started out warm but soured towards the end of his term
4 Years after their last meeting, former US President Donald Trump hosted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at his home on Friday.
Netanyahu is visiting the US. He spoke to a joint session of Congress on Thursday before meeting separately with President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. A day later, he will meet with President Trump today.
Netanyahu, Israel's longest serving prime minister, counts his relationships with key US political players as one of his main strengths. During the four years that he was Israeli Prime Minister and Trump was in the White House, the two promised an optimal relationship, but it didn't last long.
In 2021, just a year after leaving office, President Trump called Prime Minister Netanyahu dishonest and taunted him.
In an interview with journalist and author Barak Rabid, President Trump said he hadn't spoken to Prime Minister Netanyahu since their last meeting in 2020.
"I haven't spoken to him since then. That's a motherfucker," Trump told Rabid in 2021.
Now, three years after insulting Netanyahu, President Trump welcomed him to his Mar-a-Lago home amid the US election campaign. For months, he has maintained that if he were US president, Hamas would never have attacked Israel on October 7, 2023. Though he has long claimed to be Israel's best friend, he has recently repeatedly criticized Netanyahu and called for an early end to the war.
How Trump and Netanyahu clashed
Trump told Ravid he liked Netanyahu, but called him disloyal.
President Trump pointed out that Netanyahu had congratulated him after Biden's victory in the 2020 US presidential election, saying it was a terrible mistake.
Since 2020, supporters of Trump and his far-right "Make America Great Again" (MAGA) movement have made baseless claims that Biden and the Democrats "stole" the election from Trump and that Trump actually won the election. President Trump incited a mob to storm the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, in an attempt to illegally tilt the election results in his favor. The goal of the mob, consisting of several armed members, was to prevent the certification of the election results.

NITI Ayog meet today PM to Chair meeting
PM Modi to chair NITI Aayog meeting today: those present, those missing Prime Minister Narendra Modi will chair the ninth meeting of the governing body of the National Institute for Transforming India (NITI Aayog) on Saturday, July 27. The Council, the highest body of NITI Aayog, is chaired by Modi and comprises all state chief ministers, lieutenant governors of union territories and several Union ministers. All 4,444 chief ministers of states ruled by the Bharatiya Janata Party are expected to attend the meeting. However, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, an NDA ally, is yet to acknowledge his participation. Meanwhile, several opposition chief ministers have boycotted the event.
"Before the budget was passed, I had said that I would attend the meeting. A copy of my written speech was also sent to NITI Aayog as per their request. When the budget was passed, I realised how the Opposition-ruled states were being ignored. They were treated with a disregarding attitude. I would like to speak about that. "If they give me a say, then fine. If not I will protest and walk out," Ms Banerjee told the media on Friday before leaving for Delhi.
What will be the focus of the NITI Aayog meeting?
According to a central government statement, the meeting aims to promote participatory governance and cooperation between the central and state governments and improve the quality of life of people in rural and urban areas by strengthening the implementation mechanism of government interventions.
The ninth government meeting will discuss the 'Approach Paper' of the vision document for Vikshit Bharat@2047 and the role of states in achieving this goal will be discussed in detail. The meeting will also focus on the recommendations of the third national chief secretaries' conference held in December last year.
"During the meeting, recommendations were made on five key topics: Drinking water: access, quantity and quality; Electricity: quality, efficiency and reliability; Health: accessibility, affordability and quality of care; Schooling: access and quality; Land and property: accessibility, digitisation, registration and mutation," a government statement said.
