3 students dead after flooding in basement of Delhi IAS coaching centre

"We want justice": Protests after flooding at training centre kills three IAS aspirants in Delhi

Violence continues in front of the institute where angry students held their nightly protest after three civil service aspirants died in flooding in the basement of their training centre in Old Rajendra Nagar, Delhi on Saturday evening.

On Sunday morning, images from the accident scene showed students sitting on the road in front of Rau's IAS Study Circle shouting slogans such as "We want justice".

Protesting IAS candidates attacked the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), who termed the incident a "disaster".

MCD says it is a disaster but I think it is total negligence. After 30 minutes of rain, the water is knee-deep. "Disasters" are something that happen sometimes. My landlord told me that he had been asking the city council to clean the drains for the last 10-12 days,” he told news agency ANI.

"Our first demand is that action be taken against those guilty. Our immediate demand is for the actual number of dead and injured to be announced," the student added.

What happened on Saturday?

According to police, the fire department received a 110 call at around 7pm reporting that the training centre had been flooded, and rescue operations were launched.

"There were around 30 students there when the flooding started. While some students managed to flee the scene, 13-14 students were rescued and taken to hospital. A criminal case has been initiated against the three aspirants and two have been arrested," a police official said.

Two girl students and a candidate died in the incident.

On July 22, another student, also aspiring for civil services, was electrocuted after coming into contact with an iron gate during heavy rains in the capital's Patel Nagar area.

Nirmala Sitharaman responds to Mamata Banerjee's ‘mic stopped' claim, 'she should speak truth'

Nirmala Sitharaman responds to Mamata Banerjee's ‘mic stopped' claim, 'she should speak truth'

While the government's Press Information Bureau (PIB) on Saturday pursued Mamata Banerjee's claim that her microphone was switched off after she spoke for five minutes at the NITI Aayog meeting, India's Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also criticised the West Bengal Chief Minister.

Banerjee claimed that other chief ministers were allowed to speak for longer. "It's an insult. I will not attend future meetings," she added.

Prime Minister Modi chaired the ninth meeting of the NITI Aayog governing body, with a goal of making India a developed country by 2047.

The Finance Minister added that the claim that her microphone was switched off is completely false.

Reacting to Mamata Banerjee's allegations, Nirmala Sitharaman said: "CM Mamata Banerjee attended the Niti Aayog meeting. We all listened to her. Every CM had an allotted time to speak, which was displayed on a screen placed in front of each table..."

"She has said in the media that every CM had an allotted speaking time...It is unfortunate that the Chief Minister of West Bengal Ms Mamata Banerjee has alleged that her microphone was switched off, which is not true...She should speak the truth instead of reconstructing the story based on falsehoods," Nirmala Sitharaman told ANI.

The government rejected Ms Banerjee's allegations and said that her speaking time has ended.

PIB Fact Check, in a post on X, said the claim that Banerjee's microphone was switched off was "misleading". "The clock was just indicating that her time to speak was up," it said.

The TMC leader said there was nothing wrong with them (the government) giving special consideration to some states. Ms Banerjee asked, "Why do we discriminate against other states? This needs to be checked. I speak on behalf of all states." I said they only give instructions but we are to work,"

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin spoke out in support of the West Bengal Chief Minister.

"Is this cooperative federalism? Is this the attitude towards the Prime Minister? The BJP coalition government needs to understand that the Opposition is an integral part of our democracy and should not be treated like an enemy that must be silenced," he said in a post on X.

"Cooperative federalism requires dialogue and respect for all voices," Stalin added.

US Senator Rubio introduces bill to ally with India, penalise Pakistan

US Senator Marco Rubio, Republican of Florida

US Senator Rubio introduces bill to ally with India, penalise Pakistan

The “United States-India Defense Cooperation Act of 2024” requires the US Secretary of State to report instances of Pakistan using offensive force against India, providing safe havens to terror groups, and aiding militants in Jammu and Kashmir.

Treat India as an ally, punish Pakistan on terror: Marco Rubio introduces legislation to deepen ties.

Marco Rubio, a powerful Republican Senator from Florida who was in the running to be Donald Trump’s running mate, has proposed a legislation that bats for deeper India-US defence ties in response to “growing threats” to India’s borders, calls for expeditious delivery of defence equipment to India, and asks the US administration to effectively treat India as an ally when it comes to technology transfer.

The proposed legislation, titled “United States-India Defense Cooperation Act of 2024”, also mandates the US Secretary of State to track and report all instances in which Pakistan has used “offensive force, including the use of proxies” against India, provided safe havens to terror groups, and the assistance Pakistan has provided to militants in “the Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir”.

The trigger for the proposed law is the shared threat from China. "Communist China continues to aggressively expand its sphere of influence in the Indo-Pacific while seeking to undermine the sovereignty and autonomy of our regional partners," Rubio said in a statement. It is important that the United States continue to assist in combating these malign tactics. In its policy statement, the

bill proposes that U.S. policy should be directed toward supporting India "in response to growing threats to our internationally recognized land and maritime borders." It would provide India with security assistance necessary to "deter actions by foreign actors" that violate those borders, and support cooperation with India in the areas of "defense, civil space, technology, health care, and economic investment."
