Hezbollah drone chief killed, Netanyahu reiterates vow to strike Lebanon with full force.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reaffirmed Israel's commitment to conducting "full force" strikes against Hezbollah, rejecting the proposed 21-day ceasefire advocated by US and European officials.
The ongoing Israel-Lebanon conflict escalated significantly as Netanyahu vowed to continue military strikes against Hezbollah until the group ceases its rocket fire. This stance by Netanyahu has dashed hopes for a ceasefire proposal put forward by US and European officials designed to prevent an all-out war.
On Thursday, a senior Hezbollah commander, Mohammed Hussein Surour, was killed by an Israeli strike in Beirut.
During his presence in New York for the UN General Assembly, Netanyahu reiterated Israel's dedication to targeting Hezbollah. "We will persist in delivering strong blows to Hezbollah," he declared. "We are committed to achieving all our objectives, with the primary focus being the safe return of the residents of the north to their homes. Despite Israel's firm stance, the US and France persisted in negotiating a 21-day ceasefire." Top diplomats, such as US Mideast envoy Brett McGurk and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, are currently in talks with Israeli officials to discuss the suggested ceasefire. White House spokesperson John Kirby confirmed that Israel has been briefed on the ceasefire proposal, while French President Emmanuel Macron expressed optimism that Tel Aviv's refusal is not definitive. "The Prime Minister would be making a grave error by refusing to accept it, as he would then be assuming responsibility for the escalation in the region," stated Macron.
At a General Assembly session, Lebanese Foreign Minister Abdallah Bou Habib urged the UN to implement a prompt ceasefire, cautioning that the current situation poses a dire threat to Lebanon's survival.
Israel reported the targeted killing of Hezbollah drone commander Mohammed Hussein Surour in a surgical strike on Beirut, a claim later verified by the militant group. The Lebanese health ministry reported a minimum of two fatalities and 15 injuries due to the strike.
Hezbollah retaliated to the Israeli strikes by firing multiple rockets into northern Israel, with more than 45 missiles launched on Thursday, all of which were either intercepted or landed in uninhabited regions.
US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, based in London, voiced apprehensions about the potential for overall conflict in the area but maintained hope for a diplomatic resolution. Israel and Lebanon have the option to pursue an alternative course of action. "A diplomatic resolution remains possible," Austin declared.
The conflicts across borders involving Israel and Hezbollah have led to severe humanitarian impacts. Almost 700 individuals have perished in Lebanon in the past week as a result of Israeli airstrikes. The conflict has led to the displacement of tens of thousands of people residing on both sides of the border. Since the recent escalation, more than 90,000 individuals in Lebanon have been forcibly removed, bringing the total number of displaced persons to 200,000 since the conflict commenced.
Israel's military has been engaged in widespread airstrikes, specifically aimed at Hezbollah's military infrastructure, which includes storage facilities for munitions and sites for launching missiles. The militant group has pledged to persist in its "unrestricted conflict" as a reaction to Israeli actions.

Significant Enhancement To India's Quest For Permanent Seat At UN Security Council
Significant Enhancement To India's Quest For Permanent Seat At UN Security Council
At the moment, the UN Security Council is made up of five permanent members and ten non-permanent member countries that serve two-year terms.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced his support for India's pursuit of a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Thursday, following similar endorsements from US President Joe Biden and France's Emmanuel Macron. During the general debate of the seventy-ninth session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Mr. Starmer emphasized the need for the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to transform into a "more representative body." Currently, the UNSC is made up of five permanent members and 10 non-permanent member countries, which are elected for a two-year term by the General Assembly of the United Nations. The five permanent members consist of Russia, the UK, China, France, and the United States, who possess the authority to veto any significant resolution.
"We advocate for sustained African participation in the Council, with Brazil, India, Japan, and Germany as permanent members, alongside additional seats for elected members," Mr Starmer remarked. Earlier on Wednesday, French President Emmanuel Macron expressed substantial backing for India's permanent membership in the UNSC.
"As long as we have a Security Council that is obstructed, progress will be challenging based on each party's interests," Macron stated. Let us enhance the effectiveness of the United Nations by increasing its representativeness. "That is the reason why France, reiterated its support for the expansion of the Security Council," he stated at the UN General Assembly.
"Germany, Japan, India, and Brazil ought to be included as permanent members, along with two countries designated by Africa to represent its interests," he further proposed.

The ex-Tamil Nadu minister V Senthil Balaji has been granted bail by the Supreme Court
The ex-Tamil Nadu minister V Senthil Balaji has been granted bail by the Supreme Court in a money laundering case. This case is linked to the alleged 2014 'cash-for-jobs' scam. Justices Abhay S Oka and Augustine George Masih imposed stringent conditions as part of the bail grant. The Supreme Court, after considering arguments from solicitor general Tushar Mehta of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and senior advocates Mukul Rohatagi and Sidharth Luthra representing Senthil Balaji, reserved its verdict on August 12. In dismissing Senthil Balaji's bail request, the high court expressed concerns that granting bail in such a case could convey a negative message and go against public interest. Furthermore, noting the petitioner's lengthy detention of over eight months, the high court recommended that the special court handle the case promptly within a specified timeframe. "Therefore, the Principal Special Court, Chennai, is directed to resolve the case within three months from the receipt of this order," the court mandated. The high court further directed that the trial should be conducted on a daily basis following the guidelines set by the Supreme Court.
