From a single-digit count to a series of three successive wins: BJP's success journey in Haryana

From a single-digit count to a series of three wins: BJP's success journey in Haryana

The BJP used to take a backseat to regional parties like the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) and the Bansi Lal-led Haryana Vikas Party.

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Haryana won 48 seats in the 2024 state assembly elections, marking its third consecutive victory against anti-incumbency and defying exit poll predictions for the state.

The saffron party has shown significant growth in the northern state of India, growing from just six MLAs in 2000. The party successfully thwarted the opposition Congress party's efforts to take control in Haryana, capitalizing on anti-incumbency sentiment and other prominent issues in the state. Farmer distress, the Agniveer military recruitment scheme, and protests by wrestlers against BJP leader Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh for alleged sexual harassment were significant topics during the assembly polls. In 2019, the party secured 40 seats and formed the state government with support from the Dushyant Chautala-led Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) and independent MLAs. In contrast to the present situation, the party entered the elections with Manohar Lal Khattar as its candidate for chief minister.

Its current number of seats is one higher than what it achieved in the 2014 elections. The BJP challenged all 90 assembly seats for the first time in 2014. The Haryana Janhit Congress, then under the leadership of Kuldeep Bishnoi, split before the 2014 elections. In order to enhance its chances in the election, the BJP conducted four Vijay Sankalp Yatras covering all 90 assembly segments. Prior to 2014, the BJP played a subordinate role to regional parties such as the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) and the Bansi Lal-led Haryana Vikas Party, now integrated with Haryana Congress. This was until the BJP relied on its performance in the general elections and the popularity of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to secure victory in seven out of eight Lok Sabha seats.

Haryana Election Result: BJP's Third Consecutive Term Secured Through Last-Minute Strategic Move

A senior party leader, who requested anonymity, credited the BJP's victory to the consolidation of non-Jat voters. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) surprised analysts and defied anti-incumbency sentiment by winning 48 seats, securing a comfortable majority in the 90-member state assembly.

This victory comes a year after the Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) ended its partnership with the BJP and led to the replacement of Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar with Nayab Singh Saini. Party leaders view this move in March as a crucial step in addressing anti-incumbency and realigning their approach to different caste groups. The party effectively managed public discontent with Khattar, resulting in their success. His campaigning was predominantly limited, with Saini being portrayed as the forefront figure.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, under whose guidance Dharmendra Pradhan carried out the strategy, publicly declared his intention to remain as the Chief Minister. This statement dispelled any notion that he was merely a stand-in for Khattar," stated an unnamed BJP official.

Another senior member of the party, who also requested anonymity, credited the BJP's victory to the polarization of non-Jat voters. This, coupled with the strategic interchange between Khattar and Saini, was further aided by the internal discord within the Congress faction.

Israeli PM Netanyahu issued a stark warning, that Lebanon could suffer a similar fate to Gaza

Following the attack on Haifa by Hezbollah, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a stark warning, suggesting that Lebanon could suffer a similar fate to Gaza if the Lebanese people do not rid their country of the Hezbollah presence. The chilling warning followed Hezbollah's most significant assault on the Israeli city of Haifa since the start of the Gaza conflict. Netanyahu further asserted that Israel has already eliminated two potential successors of Nasrallah. Please refer to the following video for additional information.

Hezbollah conducted a multifaceted attack by launching rockets across Israel overnight

Hezbollah conducted a multifaceted attack by launching rockets across Israel overnight, while Iran denied any explosion occurring in Isfahan. Claiming responsibility, Iran-backed Hezbollah, an ally of Hamas in Gaza from Lebanon, stated that they targeted a military base south of Haifa with "Fadi 1" missiles.

One year after the Gaza war initiated by Hamas, Hezbollah attacked Israel by firing numerous rockets at Haifa, prompting the Jewish nation to prepare for further military action into Lebanon on Monday. This assault on Israel coincided with national ceremonies and demonstrations commemorating the first anniversary of the Oct.

Seven attacks have been reported in West Asia amid the Gaza conflict, heightening concerns about a potential regional war. Reports have surfaced about an explosion near Iran's Isfahan as tensions continue to escalate in the area. In the early hours of Tuesday morning, Iranian officials from the Khatam al-Anbiya Air Defense Base denied reports of explosions, as reported by Ynet. "Tomorrow marks a year since Hezbollah initiated a multi-front war in the region and commenced their ongoing attacks on Israeli civilians." In less than an hour before October 8, the Israeli Defence Forces reported that Hezbollah launched multiple projectiles towards central Israel.

A total of 190 projectiles were launched. Hezbollah, which is backed by Iran and is an ally of the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Lebanon, claimed to have targeted a military base south of Haifa with "Fadi 1" missiles and also launched another strike on Tiberias, which is located 65 km away. The armed group subsequently claimed responsibility for launching missiles at areas north of Haifa. Israel's military reported the entry of approximately 190 projectiles into Israeli territory on Monday.

There were a minimum of 12 injuries reported. Israel's military confirmed conducting widespread airstrikes on Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon. Additionally, two Israeli soldiers lost their lives, bringing the total number of Israeli military fatalities in Lebanon to 11. Since Hezbollah initiated attacks on Israel in support of Hamas a year ago, approximately 2,000 Lebanese individuals have lost their lives. Israel has recently deployed a fourth division into Lebanon as part of its expanding ground operation, which it initially deemed as "localized, limited, and targeted." The United States, Israel's closest ally, maintains that the ground operation in Lebanon remains restricted, according to State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller's statement on Monday.

One year of conflict in Gaza

One year of conflict in Gaza:

We hear various perspectives: Local Rabbi ponders the events since the October 7th attacks.

Monday will signify one year since the Hamas assaults on Israel claimed the lives of over 1,200 individuals and took 251 people captive. In the year following the October 7th attack, approximately 41,500 Palestinians in Gaza have died as a result of Israel's military retaliation, as reported by the Gaza Health Ministry. Rabbi Amy Schwartzman has firsthand experience in understanding the challenge of linking those alarming statistics to individual people. In her role as the Senior Rabbi at Temple Rodef Shalom in Falls Church, she regularly engages in conversations with members of her congregation concerning their loved ones in Israel and their nuanced emotions surrounding the ongoing conflict. "There is a significant number of young individuals who perceive a conflict between the social justice values they have been taught and the suffering endured by Palestinians," Rabbi Schwartzman expressed in an interview with WAMU's Esther Ciammachilli this week. Rabbi Schwartzman recognizes her personal duty to facilitate open dialogue among the youth in her congregation and older members who have strong ties to Israel. She will be a featured speaker at a vigil organized by the Jewish Federation of Greater Washington on October 7th at The Anthem. The event is open to the public, but registration is mandatory. Please see below for Rabbi Schwartzman's discussion with WAMU's Morning Edition host Esther Ciammachilli. The paragraph should be rephrased in a professional tone without adding any additional information and maintaining the original formatting where lines break.
