Slain Hezbollah leader Nasrallah's successors killed: Netanyahu

Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant stated on Tuesday, October 8, that the likely replacement for the deceased Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah has most likely also been eliminated.

Gallant's comments were made during a period of increasing tensions in the region, as Hezbollah remains a prominent figure in the current conflict. Hashem Safieddine, a prominent member of the militant organization, was widely seen as the leading candidate to succeed Nasrallah. His removal may lead to a leadership void within the organization.

"Hezbollah is a headless organization. "Nasrallah was eliminated, and it is likely that his replacement was also eliminated," stated Gallant to officers at the military's northern command centre in a concise video segment shared by the military. "There is no individual to determine actions or make decisions," he stated. This declaration comes after reports indicated Safieddine was the target of an Israeli airstrike last week. A Hezbollah representative alleged that Israel is impeding search and rescue efforts in the vicinity where Safieddine was believed to be located during the bombing of Beirut's southern suburbs on Thursday.

Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, the head of Hezbollah in Lebanon, is a prominent figure in the Middle East and has guided the Shia Islamist movement through numerous clashes with Israel.

He has played a key role in the organization's evolution into a well-equipped military entity, with substantial support from Iran. Nasrallah was assassinated by the Israeli armed forces during a series of nighttime airstrikes in Beirut on September 28, along with other high-ranking commanders.

Israel has purportedly neutralized a considerable number of Hezbollah's military leadership and senior officials in recent months amidst escalating tensions, triggered by Hezbollah's intervention in support of Palestinians following Hamas' lethal assault on southern Israel on October 7, 2023.
