17 killed in Israeli strikes in Gaza as Antony Blinken looks to broker peace

17 individuals perished in Israeli airstrikes in Gaza, while United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken strives to mediate peace talks. Furthermore, 42 individuals sustained injuries in the attack at the Nuseirat refugee camp, as confirmed by Awda Hospital. The Israeli strike targeted a school housing displaced individuals in central Gaza, resulting in the fatalities of 17 individuals, predominantly women and children, as stated by Palestinian medical authorities.

This incident occurred simultaneously with Blinken's statement acknowledging Israel's successful neutralization of Hamas and the impending resumption of negotiations to secure a cease-fire and the liberation of numerous Israeli captives in the upcoming days. The hospital records indicate that among those killed were 13 children under the age of 18 and three women. The Israeli military claimed to have targeted Hamas militants inside the school, but did not offer any proof.

Israel has conducted attacks on multiple schools used as shelters in the past few months, claiming to specifically target militants who are seeking refuge among the civilian population. The airstrikes frequently result in the deaths of women and children.

NEW TALKS PLANNED IN QATAR. Blinken, addressing reporters in Qatar, a crucial intermediary between Israel and Hamas, indicated that negotiators would reconvene in Doha to resume discussions.

"The key question that must be answered is whether Hamas is willing to participate," Blinken stated during his 11th visit to the region amid the conflict. Senior Hamas official Osama Hamdan confirmed that there has been no change in the group's position, despite reports from Cairo mediators about the potential revival of ceasefire talks.

The Mossad chief is scheduled to travel to Qatar to meet with the CIA director and the Qatari prime minister, as the US pushes for a revival of negotiations following the recent killing of a top Hamas leader in Gaza. Additionally, Blinken announced an extra $135 million in US aid for the Palestinians and reiterated the call for Israel to allow more assistance into the region.

SUPPLIES DWINDLE IN NORTHERN GAZA. Health workers in the besieged northern area of Gaza have issued a warning about the dire situation as Israel continues its air and ground offensive for more than two weeks.

Justice Sanjiv Khanna appointed as next Chief Justice of India, set to take over on November 11

President Droupadi Murmu officially announced the appointment of Justice Sanjiv Khanna as the forthcoming Chief Justice of India. The Central government approved this decision. Justice Khanna is set to assume the role of the 51st CJI when the current CJI DY Chandrachud retires on November 10.

Following standard procedure, CJI Chandrachud previously recommended Justice Khanna, the first puisne judge at the Supreme Court, for the position. Arjun Ram Meghwal, the Union Minister of State with independent charge of the Law & Justice Ministry, disseminated this information on X (formerly Twitter).

Justice Khanna's term will span 183 days, slightly over six months. Justice Sanjiv Khanna commenced his legal career in 1983, focusing on taxation, constitutional law, arbitration, commercial, and environmental issues, among other areas.

His retirement is scheduled for May 13, 2025. In 2004, he was designated as the Standing Counsel (Civil) for the National Capital Territory of Delhi. He assumed the role of an Additional Judge at the Delhi High Court in 2005 and was subsequently appointed as a permanent judge the following year.

Upon his appointment on January 18, 2019, he was promoted to the Supreme Court. Justice Khanna, the nephew of former Supreme Court judge Hans Raj Khanna, is recognized for his notable judgments, particularly in recent months.

He played a pivotal role in upholding the abrogation of Article 370 and in striking down the Electoral Bonds scheme for anonymous donations to political parties. In May 2023, Justice Khanna, alongside other judges on a Constitution Bench, ruled that the Supreme Court has the authority under Article 142 to grant a divorce decree in cases of irretrievable marriage breakdown.

In April of the current year, a Bench comprising Justice Khanna and Justice Dipankar Datta dismissed a petition requesting the alignment of all Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) slips with votes cast via Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) during elections. Prior to this year's Lok Sabha elections, a Bench led by Justice Khanna declined to halt the appointment of former bureaucrats Gyanesh Kumar and Dr. Sukhbir Singh Sandhu has been appointed as the new Election Commissioner.

The Bench, presided over by Justice Khanna, granted interim bail to the ex-Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on July 12 in a money laundering case related to the alleged Delhi excise policy scam. Previously, a Bench led by Justice Khanna had also granted bail to Member of Parliament (MP) Sanjay Singh in the same case. In August, Justice Khanna raised concerns over a Mumbai college's prohibition on students wearing burqa, hijab, or niqab on campus.

The presiding Bench partially halted the institution's notice in question. Justice Khanna withdrew from reviewing petitions related to the Supreme Court's decision in October 2023, which refused to acknowledge the rights of same-sex couples to marry or form civil unions. In 2021, he dissented from the majority ruling on the Central Vista Project.

Justice Khanna expressed surprise when he was appointed to the Supreme Court in 2019. During a Full Court Reference at the High Court, he discussed three issues in the legal system: delayed case resolutions, high litigation costs, and the belief that winning a case requires dishonesty. Justice Khanna stated that his judicial philosophy is to uphold the law rather than create it.

He once remarked that enthusiasm is not a desirable quality in a judge.

Havy rain and strong winds, reported in Odisha and Bengal as Cyclone Dana makes landfall on the coast

Severe weather conditions, including heavy rain and strong winds, have been reported in Odisha and Bengal as Cyclone Dana makes landfall on the coast. The cyclone made landfall between Bhitarkanika in the Kendrapara district and Dhamra in Bhadrak, with a wind speed of approximately 110 kmph. Here are key points about Cyclone Dana:

The landfall process of Cyclone Dana commenced on the Odisha coast around midnight, affecting districts such as Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Balasore, and Jagatsinghpur with wind speeds of 110 kmph and heavy rain.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) stated that the landfall process would continue for the next 1-2 hours, as of 6 am. Dana, named by Qatar, is expected to gradually weaken into a cyclonic storm by today forenoon.

Uprooted trees were reported at the office of the Special Relief Commissioner in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. The impact of the cyclone was also felt in East Midnapore and Kolkata in West Bengal. Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata, closed as a precaution, will resume operations at 9:00 am today.

Efforts were made in Odisha and West Bengal to evacuate thousands of people, close schools, cancel over 400 trains, and suspend flight operations in preparation for the severe cyclonic storm. The government of Odisha, led by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, disclosed that around 5.8 lakh individuals were evacuated, and 385 rescue teams including NDRF, ODRAF, fire service, and forest staff were deployed.

Approximately 150 platoons (each consisting of 30 personnel) from Odisha Police have been deployed for rescue operations, road clearance, and other on-ground activities.

In West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee reported that 2,43,374 individuals are seeking shelter in camps.

Additionally, she spent the entire night of Thursday at the state secretariat overseeing the situation firsthand.

Canadian Members of Parliament are urging for Justin Trudeau to step down

Canadian Members of Parliament are urging for Justin Trudeau to step down, setting a deadline of October 28 for his decision. Pressure within the Liberal party has increased, with dissident MPs demanding his resignation as party leader. A closed-door meeting on Parliament Hill saw MPs expressing their grievances to Trudeau, highlighting the rising discontent within the party.

This assembly was a component of the routine caucus gatherings held during sessions of the House of Commons. The Wednesday meeting provided an opportunity for Members of Parliament to express their concerns and frustrations directly to Prime Minister Trudeau. Trudeau is under increasing pressure from members of his own party, as dissident Liberal MPs have set a deadline of October 28 for him to make a decision about his future.

At the caucus meeting held on Wednesday, a document was introduced presenting the arguments for Trudeau's resignation. However, there was no mention of the repercussions if he does not adhere to the deadline. Sources informed Radio-Canada that 24 MPs have endorsed a request for Trudeau to resign as Liberal leader, as reported by CBC News. At the meeting, British Columbia MP Patrick Weiler submitted a document advocating for Trudeau's resignation.

The document indicated that the Liberal party may witness a revival akin to the Democrats' post-Joe Biden decision not to seek re-election for the upcoming presidential elections. MPs were allotted a two-minute slot to speak during the three-hour meeting. Approximately 20 individuals, none of whom are cabinet ministers, have reportedly called for Trudeau to resign before the upcoming election. A number of Members of Parliament also expressed their support for the prime minister, as reported by CBC News.

Immigration Minister Marc Miller has recognized the frustrations of certain Liberal MPs and has shown respect for those who directly voiced their concerns to Trudeau. "Essentially, this issue has been brewing for a while and it is crucial for individuals to express their thoughts." This is not a critical emergency. The CBC News reported that the Prime Minister can effectively handle the truth. The ongoing political tension in Canada has been exacerbated by the increasing friction between India and Canada.

The relationship between India and Canada deteriorated after Trudeau claimed in the Canadian Parliament last year that he had "credible allegations" of India's involvement in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India has refuted these allegations, deeming them "absurd" and "motivated," and has accused Canada of harboring extremist and anti-India elements within their borders. Nijjar, who was identified as a terrorist by India's National Investigation Agency in 2020, was fatally shot outside a Gurdwara in Surrey in June of last year. The recent diplomatic controversy arose when Canada identified India's High Commissioner and other diplomats as "persons of interest" in the investigation into Nijjar's death.

Video footage captured terrorists executing a fatal assault on a leading Turkish defense facility

Video footage captured from security cameras shows terrorists wielding rifles executing a fatal assault on a leading Turkish defense company's facility close to Ankara. The incident resulted in five fatalities and 22 individuals sustaining injuries. The attack took place on Wednesday. The two assailants, a female and a male, who have been "neutralized", were reportedly captured on camera perpetrating the fatal assault at the Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI), situated approximately 40 kilometers north of Ankara.

Multiple videos of the incident depict the individuals carrying bags and discharging bullets with what seemed to be assault weapons. A video depicted a significant explosion occurring at the state-run company's headquarters.

An unsubstantiated report from the private channel NTV alleged that a "terrorist group" entered the building, with one member detonating explosives. Certain media sources documented a period of sustained gunfire lasting more than sixty minutes. Media reports have indicated that the perpetrators killed the taxi driver prior to commandeering his vehicle for the purpose of carrying out the assault. Turkey's vice president, Cevdet Yilmaz, confirmed that four of the casualties were TAI employees, with the remaining victim being the cab driver. Although no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, Turkey's Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya suggested that Kurdish insurgents were likely behind it.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, currently engaged in discussions with Vladimir Putin in Russia, denounced the incident as a reprehensible assault on Turkey's defense sector. Erdogan characterized the terrorist attack on TAI, a key entity within the Turkish defense industry, as a despicable act aimed at jeopardizing national security, civic peace, and the country's defense endeavors symbolizing its aspiration for complete autonomy.
