"Promise Made, Promise Kept": White House Comments on Sunita Williams' Return
"Promise Made, Promise Kept": White House Comments on Sunita Williams' Return
In January, President Trump requested that SpaceX's CEO Elon Musk "retrieve" the two astronauts and bring them home. The White House announced that President Donald Trump had vowed to "rescue" NASA astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore, who were "stuck" in space, and he has fulfilled that commitment. The astronauts safely returned to Earth early in the morning at 3:27 AM IST. On the platform X, previously known as Twitter, the White House posted a video showcasing the moment SpaceX's Dragon spacecraft landed in the waters off Florida. They referred to it as "NASA astronauts returning to Earth after being in space for nine months."
In the same message, the White House highlighted President Trump’s success in keeping his word. "Promise made, promise kept: President Trump committed to saving the astronauts who were trapped in space for nine months. Today, they made a safe landing in the Gulf of America, with thanks to Elon Musk, SpaceX, and NASA!"
NASA astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore took part in NASA's Boeing Crew Flight Test, launching into space on June 5 the previous year. They embarked on an eight-day mission to the ISS. However, on June 6, as the Starliner was nearing the space station, NASA and Boeing discovered helium leaks and encountered problems with the spacecraft's reaction control thrusters. Consequently, the Starliner was returned to Earth without the astronauts onboard.
Later in August, it was determined to assign the two astronauts to SpaceX's Crew-9 mission. They teamed up with NASA astronaut Nick Hague and Roscosmos cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov.
Today marks the return of the Crew-9 team to Earth after more than nine months in space.
How Musk and Trump Collaborated for Sunita Williams' Return
Earlier this year, on January 28, President Trump stated he had requested Elon Musk and SpaceX to "retrieve" the two courageous astronauts "who have been essentially left behind in space by the Biden Administration."
Musk conveyed information about their discussion on social media, indicating that President Trump asked him to ensure the prompt return of the two Boeing Starliner astronauts, who have been at the space station since June 2024.
The CEO of SpaceX described it as "terrible" that the Biden administration "allowed them to remain there for such an extended period."

Sunita Williams' Family Announces Her Upcoming Trip to India
Sunita Williams has safely returned to Earth today after an unexpected nine-month mission in space. Her family expressed their joy regarding her safe return from her nine-month journey as she is of Indian descent and works as a NASA astronaut.
"That moment felt unreal," said Falguni Pandya, her sister-in-law, while speaking to NDTV. She was referencing the SpaceX Dragon craft that brought Ms. Williams back along with her teammate Butch Wilmore, who landed gently off the coast of Florida this morning. Ms. Pandya also shared that Ms. Williams plans to visit India soon.
“We don’t have specific dates yet, but she will definitely visit India shortly. I hope it will happen this year,” she mentioned.
She added that India holds ancestral significance for her father, Deepak Pandya, who lived in Gujarat, and emphasized that Ms. Williams feels a strong connection to the nation.
"She senses the affection from India and its people, and I’m sure she will return. It’s simply a question of her schedule, timing, and arrangements,” Ms. Pandya remarked.
Discussing the NASA astronaut’s return after spending 286 days in space, she commented, "We are also planning to take a vacation together. There will be plenty of time for family."

Nagpur unrest appears to be 'pre-arranged', states Devendra Fadnavis in Maharashtra assembly.
In reference to the unrest in Nagpur following the spread of rumors about a right-wing group setting fire to a religious text, Fadnavis deemed the riots as orchestrated.
In light of the ongoing Aurangzeb controversy in Maharashtra and the violence that occurred on Monday in Nagpur, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis remarked on Tuesday that Vicky Kaushal's film Chhaava presented the realities to the audience.
In reference to the unrest in Nagpur following rumors of a right-wing group burning a religious book, Fadnavis deemed the riots as orchestrated.
"This act of violence and the riots appear to be carefully orchestrated," he stated in the Maharashtra assembly, as reported by ANI. The Chief Minister also noted that certain residences and businesses were specifically targeted by the rioters. He suggested that it all seemed to be part of a larger scheme.
The BJP official further remarked that Vicky Kaushal's recent film Chhaava, a biopic on Chhatrapati Sambhaji, has stirred 'anger' among the populace towards Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. However, he urged citizens to maintain tranquility within the state.
“Following the film, the public’s feelings have been reignited. The hostility towards Aurangzeb is being displayed prominently,” he commented.
The violence that unfolded on Monday in Nagpur resulted in numerous damaged vehicles and injuries to several individuals, including at least 15 police officers, with one reported to be in critical condition, as stated by a police representative to Reuters.
Authorities reported that members of the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) set an effigy of Emperor Aurangzeb and his tomb ablaze while chanting slogans advocating for its removal from the nearby Aurangabad.
