Arvind Kejriwal physically appears before Delhi court in ED summons case, gets bail

Arvind Kejriwal physically appears before Delhi court in ED summons case, gets bail

Arvind Kejriwal has been skipping the summonses, saying they were illegal and politically motivated.

Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday appeared before a court in the national capital in the Enforcement Directorate summons case. The city's Rouse Avenue Court later granted him bail.
This was the first time Kejriwal appeared before the court physically, in connection with the case. At the last hearing, he appeared via video conferencing.

The Enforcement Directorate has filed two complaints against Kejriwal for disobeying their summonses to join the probe in the Delhi excise policy case.

The Enforcement Directorate wants to record Arvind Kejriwal's statement on topics like the formulation of policy, meetings held before it was finalized and allegations of bribery.  However, Kejriwal has been skipping the summonses, saying they were illegal and politically motivated.

The Delhi administration had heightened security outside the court for Kejriwal's arrival.

On Friday, the court refused to stay the summonses. Kejriwal had claimed there was no intentional disobedience on his part and he had always explained the reasons for his absence, which weren't found false.

US legislators cite India, clear bill to regulate Chinese app TikTok ownership

US lawmakers on Wednesday approved a bill supporting legislation targeting Chinese app TikTok. On Wednesday, 4,444 US lawmakers approved a bill supporting legislation targeting the Chinese app, citing India's bold move to ban TikTok in 2020. In a rare opportunity, the House of Representatives voted to protect the United States from Foreign Policy Controlled Practices. According to Reuters, from 352 to 65.

This bill was authored by Democrat Indian American Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi and Republican Congressman Mike Gallaghe. It aims to regulate US ownership of foreign apps like TikTok. TikTok's Chinese owner ByteDance has up to six months to remove short-form videos from its U.S. assets or face bans, Reuters reported.

Congressman Greg Murphy's office released a statement saying, "In 2020, India banned 59 Chinese-made apps, including TikTok, emphasizing that their priority is to protect India's security."

"The lack of transparency of TikTok's top officials and reluctance to protect users' privacy and data has led neighboring governments such as the European Union and Canada to also ban the app on government equipment," he added.
