Israel attacks Gaza under threat of Iranian attack on the region
Concerns that Iran may soon attack Israel have led France to advise its citizens not to travel to the region's territory on the basis of conflict negotiations to end the six-month war.
Mohammed al-Rayes, 61, told AFP he fled Israeli "airstrikes and bombs" overnight in Nuserat, in central Gaza.
There is fire and destruction everywhere, many dead people in the streets,” she said.
Another resident, 40-year-old Laila Nasser, reported hearing "bullets and missiles" throughout the night.
Nasser, who, like most Gazans, has vowed to flee to the southern city of Rafah, said: "They will do to Nuserat what they did to Khan Younis."
Israel withdrew its troops from the devastated city of Khan Younis last week after months of fighting, but officials said they were preparing to attack Hamas operatives in Rafah, near the Egyptian border.
Officials in the Hamas-controlled Palestinian coastal region reported several new airstrikes in central Gaza on Friday.
The Hamas press office said that 25 people were taken to a hospital in the city of Deir al-Balah "due to an air strike on the home of the Tabatibi family."
Syrian air strikes
The Israeli army said warplanes killed more than 60 Hamas members in Gaza the previous day.
The war began with Hamas' unprecedented attack on Israel on October 7, according to Israeli figures; 1,170 people, mostly civilians, died in this attack.
Israeli retaliatory strikes have killed at least 33,634 people in Gaza, mostly women and children, according to the regional health ministry. The death toll updated by the ministry on Friday showed that there were at least 89 more deaths than the previous day.
Gaza was recently bombed after a deadly April 1 airstrike destroyed the Iranian consulate in Damascus. Israel then said it was bolstering its air defenses and delaying the clash between troops.
Iran accused its former enemy Israel of attacking Iran-linked targets in Syria since the start of the Gaza war.
The mission includes forces of the Lebanese Hezbollah movement in Syria. The group has also frequently exchanged fire with Israel on the Lebanese border since October.
Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdullahian said he received a call late Thursday from German Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock and the foreign ministers of the United Kingdom and Australia.
'Major attack'

France warned its citizens on Friday not to travel to Iran, Israel, Lebanon or the Palestinian territories after the US Embassy in Israel imposed restrictions on the movements of its representatives out of concern for security.
