SMART is a next-generation missile-based lightweight torpedo launch system designed and developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to extend the Indian Navy's anti-submarine warfare capabilities far beyond conventional ranges and improve on lightweight torpedoes, he said.

This canister-based missile system comprises of two-stage solid propulsion, electro-mechanical actuators, high-precision inertial navigation system etc.

It carries an advanced lightweight torpedo as payload along with a parachute-based release system.

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh praised DRDO and industry partners for the success of SMART flight tests. "The development of the system will further strengthen the naval force," he said.

Minister of Defense Research and Development and his DRDO Chairman Dr. Sameer V. Kamat commended the synergistic efforts of the entire SMART team and urged them to continue on the path of excellence.
