Delhi temperature hits 49.9C as India’s capital records hottest day

At least 3 weather stations in Delhi registered maximum temperatures of 49°C or higher. Mungeshpur and Narela recorded 49.9°C, followed by Najafgarh at 49.8°C.

Temperatures in Delhi have hit a record-high of 49.9C (121.8F), as authorities warned of water shortages in India’s capital.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD), which reported “severe heatwave conditions”, recorded the temperatures on Tuesday at two Delhi suburbs stations at Narela and Mungeshpur. The weather bureau said the temperatures were nine degrees higher than expected.

The IMD warned of the heat’s impact on health, especially for infants, elderly people and those with chronic diseases.

India is no stranger to searing summer temperatures.

Forecasters predicted similar temperatures on Wednesday for the city with a population of more than 30 million, issuing a red alert warning notice for people to take care. In May 2022, parts of Delhi hit 49.2C.

Years of scientific research have found climate change is causing heatwaves to become longer, more frequent and more intense.  City authorities warned of the risk of water shortages as the capital swelters. The water minister, Atishi Marlena, called for “collective responsibility” in stopping wasteful water use, the Times of India newspaper reported on Wednesday.  To address the problem of water scarcity, we have taken a slew of measures such as reducing water supply from twice a day to once a day in many areas,” Atishi said, the Indian Express reported.

The water thus saved will be rationed and supplied to the water-deficient areas where supply lasts only 15 to 20 minutes a day,” she added.

The heatwave has been building up inexorably for weeks, but even so residents were shocked by conditions on Tuesday and Wednesday. People told of fingers being scorched from touching the steering wheel of a car, and tap water was coming out at boiling temperatures.

“Having a shower is almost a waste of time,” said Aruna Verma, a chemistry teacher. “You come out of it and instantly you are a sweaty mess again.”

Newspapers have published lists of does and don’ts based on doctors’ advice. People have been urged to stay indoors and wear light, loose cotton clothes – advice that is impossible for much of the city’s workforce to follow, including labourers and market stall sellers.

Construction workers have mostly stopped working between noon and 4pm. “The metal rods I’m working with are too hot to touch. Even if I restart work at 5pm, the rods are burning and the heat from the sparks makes it worse,” said Babu Ram, a welder working on a block of flats in New Friends Colony, south of the city centre.

Arvind Kejriwal's Plea For Extension Of Bail Won't Be Heard By Supreme Court

The Supreme Court is likely not to hear Arvind Kejriwal's plea seeking a seven-day extension of his interim bail in a corruption case related to Delhi's liquor policy. The court had last month granted interim bail to Kejriwal to allow him to campaign for the Lok Sabha elections and asked him to appear before it on June 2, the day after the final polling day.

The Supreme Court registrar rejected the application, saying the application is "inadmissible" as the Delhi Chief Minister has obtained leave to file a regular bail application in court.

Kejriwal had sought the extension on medical grounds and had requested the court for an urgent hearing today.

Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, representing Kejriwal, said in the application that "considering his health complications and increasing signs of risk, a medical examination is necessary to protect him from possible harm in prison for a prolonged period." He also stressed that AAP leaders will remain "publicly visible and accessible" while out on bail.

"There is no risk of evading legal process and the conditions (of interim bail) laid down by the Supreme Court have been adhered to...," Singhvi said. The investigating agency believes that the Delhi Chief Minister played a key role in drafting the now-defunct policy and in demanding bribes and kickbacks in exchange for liquor licences. It has alleged that the AAP received bribes worth Rs 100 crore, which were used to fund election campaigns in Goa and Punjab.

Rafah attacks: Israeli forces have continued their attacks on the border town once considered the region's last refuge, despite receiving a ceasefire order from the UN Supreme Court last week.

All eyes on Rafah: What's happening in Gaza City as Israel steps up attacks?

"All eyes on Rafah" refers to the ongoing massacre in this Gaza city.

In the latest bloodshed, Israeli artillery and air strikes have killed at least 45 people in the southern Gaza city of Rafah in recent days, most of whom have taken refuge in tents.

Israel launched its attack on Rafah late Sunday, hours after Hamas barraged the Tel Aviv area with rockets, most of which were intercepted.

Israeli forces have continued their attacks on the border town once considered the region's last refuge, despite receiving a ceasefire order from the UN Supreme Court last week. All Eyes are on Rafah

"All Eyes are on Rafah" is an expression referring to the ongoing massacre in this Gaza city.

Rafah was a key entry point for humanitarian aid until Israel stepped up its military offensive on the Gaza side of the border earlier this month and seized control of the border.

The fighting in Rafah has displaced more than one million Palestinians, most of whom were already displaced by the Israeli-Hamas war.

Palestinians say they face Israeli attacks wherever they go, and have been moving up and down the Gaza Strip in recent months.

Hundreds of thousands have fled south to Rafah as Israeli forces call on residents in the north to evacuate before carrying out operations in central Gaza and the southern city of Khan Yunis.

The Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip's Ministry of Health said in a statement that despite Israeli shelling of health facilities in and around Rafah, only one was still functioning.

Humanitarian groups warned of an escalating crisis in Gaza after fighting in Rafah cut off a major aid route to the area.

A long-threatened Israeli incursion into Rafah

The attack on Rafah sparked new outrage and prompted protests from international leaders. But Israel said it would continue its attacks on Rafah despite global condemnation and a US warning.

A Gaza security official said Israeli tanks were now also in "central and southwestern Rafah".

The United Nations has warned for years of impending famine, especially in the besieged northern Gaza Strip. And since the Rafah invasion, the UN Secretary-General has said he is increasingly concerned about malnutrition in the south. The deadly attacks in Gaza City have led to growing pressure on the United States to take a tougher stance. Doubts are growing about how long President Joe Biden can tolerate Israeli attacks on Rafah after the International Court of Justice, the UN's highest court of which both the United States and Israel are members, ordered a halt to the attacks.

The war in Gaza began after Hamas attacked southern Israel on October 7, killing more than 1,170 people, most of them civilians. At least 36,096 killed in Israeli retaliatory attacks in Gaza.
