All Jagannath Temple gates opened after 4 years in line with BJP’s poll promise

All four gates of the Jagannath Temple in Puri on Thursday were opened for devotees for the first time since 2020. This was in line with the poll promise of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which came to power in Odisha this month after 24 years of rule by the Biju Janata Dal (BJD). Chief Minister Mohan Majhi and his council of ministers were present at the temple when the gates were opened, a day after the swearing-in ceremony.

When the Covid-19 pandemic hit in 2020, the Jagannath Temple Administration closed all four gates of the 12th-century monument. Later, only the Singhadwara (Lion Gate) was opened for devotees. The Ashwa Dwara (Horse Gate), Vyagra Dwara (Tiger Gate) and Hasti Dwara (Elephant Gate) remained closed till Thursday, creating difficulties for devotees. The BJP had promised in its election manifesto that it would open the remaining gates if it came to power. One devotee said the gates should have been opened long ago. "We are happy that the new government has kept its promise." At his first Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, Majhi cited crowding and inconvenience to devotees and said all four gates would be opened on Thursday. "It was a decision to ensure smooth conduct of pilgrimage," he said. Announcing an outlay of Rs 500 crore for the temple, Majhi said sufficient funds had not been allocated for its maintenance, beautification and restoration. The Jagannath Temple has emerged as a key issue in the just-concluded elections. The BJP has raised the issue of the keys to the temple's Ratna Bhandar (treasure house) going missing. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other senior politicians from the Bharatiya Janata Party have promised to inform the public about the condition of the treasures in the Ratna Bhandar, which had not been inspected for 40 years.

Kuwait Fire incident killed 42 Indians

At least 42 Indians were among those killed in a fire that broke out in a seven-storey building in Mangaf, southern Kuwait, on Wednesday. The massive blaze in Kuwait has killed 49 people, mostly Indian workers, and is said to be the worst building fire in the country's history, sparking a tough crackdown by local authorities on housing violations. The incident is the worst building fire in Kuwait's history, and has prompted calls for action against landlords and managers who "illegally house large numbers of foreign workers in highly dangerous conditions to save money," the Kuwait Times reported. Sheikh Fahad Al Yousuf Al Sabah, Kuwait's First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, said authorities would begin inspecting homes from Thursday and would take action against violators without warning. The owner of the building where the fire occurred will be detained until an investigation is completed, he said.

Al-Sabah newspaper said Kuwaiti labour authorities would investigate overcrowding in buildings and non-compliance with safety conditions by foreign workers.

Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh, who was due to travel to Kuwait by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to oversee the relief efforts and facilitate the speedy repatriation of the bodies, left New Delhi on Thursday morning.

"Most of the victims suffered burn injuries and some of the bodies are charred beyond recognition," Singh told media, adding that DNA tests were being conducted to identify the bodies. An Indian Air Force (IAF) aircraft was ready to transport the bodies, he said.

The injured were taken to five public hospitals in Kuwait and the Ministry of External Affairs quoted hospital authorities as saying that most patients were in stable condition.

Hezbollah fires dozens of rockets into northern Israel as Gaza ceasefire talks hit a deadlock

The attack came during Blinken's visit to the region to promote a U.S.-backed Gaza ceasefire proposal. Hezbollah retaliates for killing of top commander

Lebanon's Hezbollah fired a large number of rockets into northern Israel on Wednesday in retaliation for the killing of a senior commander, further stoking tensions in the region as the fate of an internationally backed Gaza ceasefire plan hangs in the balance.

The retaliatory attack came as U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken was visiting the region to promote a globally backed ceasefire proposal that has not been fully accepted by either Israel or Hamas. The militant group submitted its first official response late Tuesday, calling for "changes" to the agreement.

Hezbollah, an ally of Iran-backed Hamas, has been exchanging fire with Israel almost daily since the start of Israel's eight-month war with Hamas, and said the war would only end if a ceasefire were established in Gaza. This has raised fears that an even more devastating regional conflagration could break out.

Air raid sirens sounded across northern Israel, and the army said some 160 projectiles were fired from southern Lebanon, making it one of the largest attacks since the fighting began. There were no immediate reports of casualties, as some were intercepted and others sparked forest fires. Hezbollah said it had fired rockets and projectiles at two military bases in retaliation for the killing of Taleb Sami Abdullah, 55. He is known within Hezbollah as Hajj Abu Taleb and is the highest-ranking commander killed since fighting began eight months ago. An Israeli military strike destroyed a house late Tuesday night about 10 kilometers from the border where Abdullah and three other officials were meeting. Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon have killed more than 400 people, most of them Hezbollah members, but the dead also included more than 70 civilians and non-combatants. On the Israeli side, 15 soldiers and 10 civilians have been killed in Gaza since the war began. Other Iran-allied groups, including powerful militias in Iraq and Syria and Yemen's Houthi rebels, have also attacked Israeli, U.S. and other targets since the war began, often drawing Western retaliation. The first direct artillery exchange between Israel and Iran took place in April.

Joe Biden's son Hunter found guilty of gun crimes

Joe Biden says families who leave guns unlocked should be held ‘responsible’ in first remarks after Hunter's verdict

Joe Biden has demanded that families who leave guns unlocked be punished. These public remarks, made on Tuesday, June 11, were his first after his son Hunter Biden was convicted of three felonies.

“It’s time we establish universal background checks — and by the way, and require the safe storage of firearms,” the president, 81, said at a pro-gun control conference held a few blocks from the White House. “We should hold families responsible if they don’t provide those locks on those guns.”

Biden added that he had visited three “major crime scenes” where “the mother or father left open — left stuff out on the desk, left it out on the table and the kid came out and used it.” However, he refrained from directly addressing his son’s guilty verdict during the pre-scheduled speech, delivered to the group Everytown for Gun Safety, a nonprofit founded by Michael Bloomberg, a former New York City Mayor.

Joe Biden’s public show of support for son Hunter

Shortly after Hunter’s guilty verdict, Biden broke his silence, saying in a statement, as per AFP, “I am the President, but I am also a Dad. So many families whose loved ones have struggled with addiction know the pride that comes with seeing a loved one be so strong and resilient in overcoming addiction and recovering. "I accept the outcome of this case and will continue to respect the judicial process as Mr. Hunter considers his appeal." The President then visited Wilmington, Delaware to comfort his son, before arranging a photo op at the Delaware Air National Guard airport. He was also seen at the airport hugging Hunter and speaking to him for a few minutes in a public show of support. Hunter's wife, Melissa Cohen, and their 4-year-old son, Beau, were also present for the conversation.

Five killed in Israeli missile strikes on Lebanon's northeast near border with Syria

Five killed in Israeli rocket attack in northeast Lebanon near Syrian border 4,444 4,444 At least five people have been killed in an Israeli rocket attack on a tanker convoy in the northeastern Lebanese district of Hermel, near the Arab-Syrian border.

The so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said "three Hezbollah members were killed in nine Israeli rocket attacks on a tanker convoy and buildings late on Monday" in the village of Hosh al-Sayyid Ali in the same district.

The Britain-based Observatory added that two more people were killed in the attack.

Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP that five more people were wounded in the attack and two were missing.

Syrian air defenses were activated to repel the attack, the Observatory said. The incident came just hours after Hezbollah said in a statement that it had used "appropriate weapons" to attack forces gathering at Kibbutz Manara in the Upper Galilee region, killing and wounding several Israeli soldiers. The kibbutz borders Lebanon and overlooks the Hula Valley.

The statement continued that the bullets hit their intended targets precisely.

Lebanese resistance fighters also attacked Israeli soldiers stationed in buildings in the Yaron settlement in the western Galilee, leaving casualties.

Hezbollah stressed that the two operations were carried out in solidarity with the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, in support of the brave and heroic Palestinian resistance groups, and in retaliation for the attacks of Israel's enemies on areas in southern Lebanon, especially the villages of Hura and the city of Shebaa.

Since then, Israeli forces have also attacked Lebanese territory, and Hezbollah has launched almost daily retaliatory attacks in support of the Palestinian population of the Gaza Strip.

Hezbollah vowed to continue its retaliatory attacks as long as the Tel Aviv regime continues its attacks on Gaza.

At least 37,124 Palestinians have since been killed in the besieged areas, the majority of them women and children, according to local health officials, and a further 84,712 have been wounded.

More than eight months after the Israeli massacre began, much of the Gaza Strip lies in ruins and supplies of food, clean water and medicine are under a crippling blockade.

Oppn not adversary, polls not war,’ says RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, urges new govt to prioritise Manipur

Oppn not adversary, polls not war,’ says RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, urges new govt to prioritise Manipur

Addressing an RSS event in Nagpur, Bhagwat stressed the need to abandon election campaign rhetoric and focus on the country's issues. He also said that a true sevak should not be "arrogant".

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) leader Mohan Bhagwat expressed concern over the ongoing unrest in Manipur following the outbreak of violence in May last year and stressed the need to establish peace in the northeastern state.

Addressing a group of RSS leaders and trainees in Nagpur, Bhagwat also spoke about the qualities that a true sevak should possess. He said a sevak should be proud of his work but also be "detached" and "free from arrogance".

The RSS chief said the Manipur issue should be given "priority". Manipur had been waiting for peace for a year. It had been peaceful for 10 years. It seemed as if the old gun culture had ended. And suddenly, the conflicts that were created or instigated there are still stoking their fires and crying out for help. Who will pay attention to this? It is our duty to give this top priority," he said.

Speaking for the second time on the issue since violence erupted in the state, Bhagwat also stressed the need to move away from election campaign rhetoric and focus on the issues facing the country.

The RSS chief also stressed that elections should not be viewed as a "war".

"Elections are a consensus-building process. "We have a system where both sides of an issue are represented in a like-minded parliament. Of course, it is difficult to reach such an agreement among people who came there through cut-throat competition. That's why we have to rely on the majority. All contestants have the same goal. But this is a competition, not a war," Bhagwat said.

He continued: "The way things happened, how factions reached the lower ranks, the impact of divisive election strategies, the social and psychological fault lines are completely ignored and organisations like the RSS are needlessly drawn into the same. Technology has spread lies, absolute lies. Are technology and knowledge synonymous?"

"We need to move away from the excitement of elections and think about the problems facing the country," he said.

The RSS "has done our job to galvanise public opinion," the organisation's chief said. "True servants observe decorum." One must perform one's duties efficiently. To strive but not succumb, that is our instinct," he added.

"The people have been given their mission and everything will happen accordingly. Why? How? "The Sangh is not interfering in this," he said.

Bhagwat added that the Sangh tries to shape public opinion after every election and is not obsessed with analysing the results.

On the importance of the opposition, Bhagwat said: "They are the opposition showing a side. Their views should also be made known."

"Virodhi ke jaga pratipaksh kaha je," he said.

"There are two sides, they call it the other side, I call it the other side. He is not an adversary, he should not be seen as an adversary. Woh pratipaksh hai, that means highlighting one side (of the issue)," Bhagwat said.

"That too needs to be taken into consideration. If we have to do something like this... there should be some decency in participating in elections. This courtesy was not observed. Its implementation is necessary as the challenges facing our country are yet to be resolved," he added.

"The same government i.e. the NDA is back in power. It is true that a lot of positive things have happened in the last 10 years... We have progressed in many areas be it economy, defence strategy, sports, culture and technology. But that does not mean that we are now free from challenges..." Bhagwat said.

The Bharatiya Janata Party suffered a defeat in the Lok Sabha elections in Manipur. Both seats in the state ruled by BJP's Biren Singh were elected to the Assembly.

The RSS chief said: "This is the essence of democracy. Like Dr. Ambedkar, spiritual regeneration is essential for great change."

He said a true servant (sevak) is one who does his job but is not proud of having done it. "Do your job but don't be proud of the work you have done," he told RSS members.

"One who observes the bounds of decorum in the performance of his duties, who takes pride in his work but is not attached and has no arrogance - such a person really, in the true sense of the word, deserves to be called a sevak," he added.

Bhagwat acknowledged that "thousands of years of discriminatory practices have created division and even a form of anger."

"Competition is inevitable in elections." People try to push others into the background, but there is a certain dignity in that too. Lies should not be used. The people are elected to sit in parliament and govern our country,” he said.

He said: “Go to parliament and form a consensus on various issues. Our tradition is to form a consensus... Rigvedic rishis understood the human mind... Therefore, they accepted that there can be no 100% unanimity, but still, when society decides on a ‘consensus of opinion’, it becomes a sarchitta. The problem with external ideologies is that they believe they are the only guardians of correctness. ”

"Even the religions and ideas that came into Bharat were followed by some people for various reasons. But there is nothing wrong with our culture because of that. We need to give up the idea that only we are right and others are wrong," he said.

"By thinking, understanding, removing the distortions that have developed over time and realising that opinions and ways can differ. All can be different. We have to consider this country ours, have a committed relationship with it and act with the realisation that all its sons are our brothers," Bhagwat said. "But injustice happens and distance is created between people."

"One thing is to put aside the idea that you are right and everyone else is wrong. There is no need to proselytise or anything like that. All opinions are right and everyone is equal so it's better to stick to your opinion. Respect the opinions of others equally,” he added.
