Not an army with a country ': Netanyahu expresses displeasure over IDF's plan for 'tactical pause' in Gaza

Israeli television stations eventually quoted Netanyahu as criticising the military’s plan to start ’tactical pause’ in Rafah. ‘We have a country with an army, not an army with a country,’ he was quoted saying

Just hours after the Israel Defence Force (IDF) announced a “tactical pause” in its ongoing operation in Gaza, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly expressed his displeasure with the plan.

On Sunday, the Israeli military announced a daily “tactical pause” that would begin in the Rafah area at 8 am (local time) and remain in effect until 7 pm (local time) along the main Salah al-Din road. The main aim of the pause is to allow aid trucks to transit between the Kerem Shalom crossing from Israel.

However, a source close to the Prime Minister’s office said that the Israeli premier was not happy with the plan. “When the prime minister heard the reports of an 11-hour humanitarian pause in the morning, he turned to his military secretary and made it clear that this was unacceptable to him,” an unnamed Israeli official told media late on Sunday,  The Guardian reported.

The official maintained that the Israeli Prime Minister received assurances that “there will be no change” in the military’s policy and fighting will continue in Rafah “as planned”. Interestingly, Israeli television stations eventually quoted Netanyahu as criticising the military. “We have a country with an army, not an army with a country," he was quoted saying.

Netanyahu’s reaction underlines the political tensions

The decision for a tactical pause came after the IDF stated that eight Israeli soldiers were killed during a military operation on Saturday. However, the reaction from Netanyahu underlined political tensions over the issue of aid coming into Gaza.

National security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, who leads one of the nationalist religious parties in Netanyahu’s ruling coalition also denounced the idea of a “tactical pause”. He went on to say that whoever spearheaded the idea was a “fool” and should lose their job.

The spat is the latest in the series of clashes within Israel’s controversial war cabinet. Earlier this month, centrist former general Benny Gantz announced his resignation from the cabinet, accusing Netanyahu of having “no effective strategy in Gaza”.   Interestingly, the limited pause was announced after talks with Egypt and pressure from the US to increase the flow of humanitarian aid into Gaza. The IDF notified that the pause was being coordinated with the UN and international aid agencies.

“We welcome this announcement,” said Jens Laerke, a spokesperson for the UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). “This has yet to translate into more aid reaching people in need," he added.

EVM "hacking" controversy: Who is Ravindra Waikar, Shiv Sena MP from Mumbai North West?

Ravindra Dattaram Waikar contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections as Shiv Sena candidate against Eknath Shinde for the Mumbai North West Assembly seat and won with 48 votes.

A fresh political controversy erupted after Mid-Day reported that Ravindra Waikar, a relative of the Shiv Sena candidate for the Mumbai North West Lok Sabha constituency, was caught "connecting" his mobile phone to the internet and talking during the counting of votes on June 4. Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs).

With opposition parties, including the Congress, questioning the reliability of EVMs, the Bharatiya Janata Party has attacked opposition leaders and demanded the Election Commission of India to prosecute all those who spread the reports and "amplify lies".

Rahul Gandhi and others on Sunday also cited a post by the social media platform's chairman Elon Musk.

However, Vandana Suryavanshi, returning officer for Mumbai North West Lok Sabha constituency, dismissed the Mid-Day report as a "hoax" and said the paper had filed a defamation complaint against her. She added that EVMs are standalone systems that are not programmable and have no wireless communication capabilities.

Who is Rabindra Waikar?

Rabindra Dattaram Waikar contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Mumbai North West Lok Sabha constituency as the Shiv Sena candidate led by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and won the seat by just 48 votes.

In 2020, BJP leader Kirit Somaiya alleged that the Thackeray and Waikar families were involved in financial transactions. He alleged that Thackeray's wife Rashmi and Waikar's wife Manisha had purchased 21 plots of land in Korai village in Murud taluka, Raigad, from Anvay Naik, his wife Akshata Naik and their daughter Adnya Naik. Indian accused in Gurpatwant Singh Pannun murder plot extradited from Czech Republic to US

According to media reports, Nikhil Gupta, an Indian national accused of the contract killing of Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, founder of the banned Sikh separatist Khalistan organisation Sikhs for Justice, has been extradited from the Czech Republic to the US. Gupta (52) was arrested in the Czech Republic on June 30 last year at the request of the US government. He is scheduled to appear in federal court in New York on Monday. Gupta is currently being held at the Metropolitan Detention Centre in Brooklyn. The Washington Post, citing anonymous sources, first reported his extradition.

"Mr. Gupta, who was jailed in the Czech Republic, arrived in New York over the weekend, according to the people, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive court proceedings. Extradited defendants must typically appear in court within a day of entering the country," the paper said.

Federal prosecutors have alleged that Gupta hired a hit man and paid him $15,000 up front to kill Pannun. They also allege that an unnamed Indian government official was involved. Mr. Gupta's extradition coincides with U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan's planned visit to New Delhi for the ICET dialogue and to discuss the issue with his Indian counterpart Ajit Doval.

India has denied any involvement and has launched an investigation into the allegations. Gupta, through his lawyer Rohini Mutha, has denied the charges and said he was wrongly accused. In her petition to the Indian Supreme Court, Mutha argued that there was no evidence linking Gupta to the alleged conspiracy.

She also alleged that Gupta had received poor legal advice during his detention from lawyers appointed by the Czech government and influenced by US authorities. Rohini Mutha also said India and the US were "blaming each other" over foreign policy.

Ukraine War: Volodymyr Zelensky says peace talks with Russia ‘tomorrow’ if Russian Troops leave today

Ukraine war: Volodymyr Zelensky says peace talks with Russia will take place "tomorrow"...

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky suggested on Sunday that he is ready to hold peace talks with Russia "tomorrow" once his troops leave the country. The statement came a day after Russian President Vladimir Putin said he was ready for an immediate ceasefire if Kiev abandons the four regions and gives up NATO membership.

"If Russia withdraws from our legal territory, we can start negotiations with our country from tomorrow without waiting for anything... Russia does not want peace, that's a fact," Zelensky said at a press conference in Switzerland. Meanwhile, the Ministry of External Affairs reiterated India's stance for a peaceful resolution of the conflict.

"India should continue dialogue with all parties and both parties should contribute to efforts towards a lasting peace." "India continues to believe that a peaceful resolution to the Ukrainian conflict requires sincere and practical engagement between the two countries," the foreign ministry said. Zelenskyy also said the current level of Western military assistance is not enough to ensure victory for Kiev. He also called on China to seriously participate in formulating a peace plan. "Help is available. There is a serious package too. Is winning enough? No. Is it too late? Yes," he told reporters.

This week, leaders of more than 90 countries are holding a crucial diplomatic summit in central Switzerland to find a way to end 27 months of Moscow's aggression. Russia was not invited to those talks.

The final communiqu├й stated that "we believe that achieving peace requires inclusion and dialogue among all parties," and was supported by the vast majority of participating countries.
