Money trail worth Rs 450 crore': What ED told court
'Money trail worth Rs 450 crore': What ED told court while seeking extension of Arvind Kejriwal's remand
The court extended the remand of Arvind Kejriwal and another accused till July 3.
A Delhi court on Wednesday extended the remand of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in a money laundering case linked to the alleged excise scam till July 3.
Kejriwal jailed in Tihar No. 2 Jail in connection with excise policy. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested him on March 21.
The Supreme Court had on May 10 granted interim bail to Kejriwal for 21 days for campaigning for the Lok Sabha elections. He surrendered in Tihar Jail on June 2.
During the hearing on Wednesday, the court sought to know why extension of pre-trial custody was necessary.
The ED lawyer submitted that Vinod Chauhan had received Rs 25 crore from K. Kavitha's personal secretary through Abhishek Boimpalli for the Goa elections, reported ANI.
During the hearing, the investigating officer told the court that the Rs 25 crore was part of a Rs 1,000 crore fund trace. He also added that Rs 45 crore has been traced so far. A fund trail of Rs 450 crore has been traced so far.
The IO also said that Vinod Chauhan is under investigation and is expected to be charged by the end of this month.
During the hearing, Additional Solicitor General SV Raju said everything related to the case ultimately comes down to Kejriwal's role. He also clarified that the allegation that Kejriwal had demanded Rs 100 crore was made by the CBI and not the ED.
Kejriwal's lawyer Vivek Jain, however, opposed the ED's request for extension of remand saying there was no justification for extending his remand and argued that the request was "baseless".
"We are appealing against pre-trial custody." "The arrest has already been challenged. The case is still pending in the Supreme Court," the lawyer said.
Lok Sabha Speaker elected without contest since Independence
Lok Sabha Speakers elected unopposed since independence
Between 1925 and 1946, there were six contests for the post of Speaker of the Central Legislative Assembly. Vitthalbhai Patel was unanimously re-elected in 1927 after completing his first term. Patel resigned on 28 April 1930 following Mahatma Gandhi's call for civil disobedience.
The Lok Sabha Speaker has always been elected unopposed since independence. Therefore, if the opposition United India forces the election of the 18th Lok Sabha Speaker on 26 June, it will be the first time in the history of independent India that the important Speaker of the Lower House will be held by a single party. It is always decided by agreement between the government and the opposition or coalition.
Example: On August 24, 1925, the first elections were held for the Speaker of the Central Legislative Assembly, the lower house of the Imperial Legislative Council, the legislative branch of British India. Swaraj Party leader Vitthalbhai J. Patel defeated T. Rangachariar. Patel, the first non-official member to be elected Speaker, won by a narrow margin of two votes. Patel received 58 votes and Rangachariar 56.
Buoyed by its growing strength in Sabah, India is eyeing the post of Deputy Speaker. As per practice, if the ruling party or alliance wins the Speaker's post, the Deputy Speaker is elected from the opposition party or alliance of members of Parliament.
Parliament from June 24
The election date for the newly elected Speaker's post in Parliament is scheduled for next week. The first session of the 18th Parliament will begin on June 24. The new Lok Sabha members will be sworn in and the Speaker will be elected. The election date has been set for June 26.
