Top Fundraiser George Clooney Urges Biden To Quit

'Can't Win Against': Top Fundraiser George Clooney Urges Biden To Quit

George Clooney -- a member of the Hollywood elite that provides key support to the Democrats -- joined a growing list of public figures calling for Biden, 81, to step aside after his terrible debate performance against Donald Trump last month. A self-described "lifelong Democrat," Clooney co-hosted a star-studded fundraiser with Biden in Los Angeles only last month featuring former president Barack Obama.

The Biden campaign said that the event brought in a record $28 million.

"It's devastating to say it, but the Joe Biden I was with three weeks ago at the fund-raiser was not the Joe 'big F-ing deal' Biden of 2010," Clooney wrote, referencing a famous hot-mic clip from Biden's vice presidency.

  • George Clooney urges Joe Biden to quit presidential race
  • Clooney believes Democrats will lose with Biden as nominee
  • Clooney claims many politicians privately share his view

"He wasn't even Joe Biden in 2020. He was the same guy we all saw in the debates," Clooney said, contradicting Biden's claim that his poor performance in the debates was an isolated incident.

"A dam has broken" among Democrats who have publicly called on Biden to withdraw, Clooney said, calling for more remarks.

"Leading Democrats, Chuck Schumer, Hakeem Jeffries, Nancy Pelosi, and any senator, congressman or other candidate facing defeat in November, must call on this president to voluntarily step down."

The Oscar winner dismissed concerns that Biden's resignation would cause chaos. Democrats want Trump out of power and did not endorse a replacement candidate months before the election. The party should listen to candidates like Vice President Kamala Harris and Maryland Gov. Wes Moore, "so we can go to the Democratic Convention next month and sort things out," he wrote.

Keir Starmer indicates Ukraine can use UK missiles to strike Russia

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer suggested on Wednesday that Ukraine might use long-range missiles supplied by the UK to attack Russian military targets in the event of a war.

Speaking to reporters on a flight to Washington to attend the NATO 75th anniversary summit, Starmer told the Ukrainian military that the decision on the use of the UK-supplied Storm Shadow missiles rests with the country's military.

British military aid is "for defensive purposes, but it is for Ukraine to decide how it is used for these defensive purposes," said Starmer, who became UK leader last Friday after a landslide Labour victory.

The comments confirm that Labour is taking the same position on air-launched missiles as Rishi Sunak, Liz Truss and the Conservative government under Boris Johnson previously.

Since Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a full-scale invasion of neighbouring Ukraine in February 2022, Britain has been one of Kiev's strongest allies.

Britain has provided Ukraine with funding, weapons and military training for the war. Britain was the first country to supply long-range weapons to the Ukrainian military, announcing it would supply Storm Shadow missiles in May last year.

Starmer was due to reiterate Britain's support for Ukraine and its "unwavering commitment" to the Western military alliance NATO at a summit with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

During his visit to Austria, Prime Minister Modi reiterated India's position on the Ukraine crisis and stressed the need for dialogue and diplomacy for peace and stability.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday reiterated India's position that a solution to the Ukraine crisis will not be found on the battlefield and conveyed New Delhi's assessment of the conflict.

The Ukrainian war played a key role in Modi's meeting with Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer, who is visiting Vienna for the first time in 41 years. The two sides also discussed ways to strengthen cooperation in areas such as trade, investment, science and technology, green energy and climate change.

Prime Minister Modi on Tuesday reiterated the message he had conveyed to Russian President Vladimir Putin in a televised address from the Kremlin: peace talks under the shadow of arms cannot succeed and the warring parties must return to dialogue. Nehamel said his meeting with Modi was an opportunity to get India's assessment of the situation and "make Europe's concerns known to India."

"Prime Minister Nehamel and I discussed at length the ongoing conflicts around the world, be it the Ukraine conflict or the situation in West Asia. As I have said before, this is not the time for war. No problem can be solved on the battlefield," Modi said in Hindi after the meeting.

"Loss of innocent lives anywhere is unacceptable. "India and Austria attach great importance to dialogue and diplomacy to restore peace and stability as soon as possible. We are both ready to offer all cooperation to achieve this," he said.

Nehamer said India and Austria share common concerns about the geopolitical situation and the two leaders had "very intensive discussions on Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine." Referring to Modi's just-concluded visit to Russia, Nehamer said, "It was particularly important for me to hear the Prime Minister's personal assessment of Russia's intentions regarding the peace process."

Divorsed Muslim Women can seek Maintenance under 125 Cr PC

Divorsed Muslim Women can seek Maintenance under 125 Cr PC

The Supreme Court has held that a Muslim woman who has been wrongfully divorced by declaring triple talaq is entitled to receive maintenance from her husband under Section 125 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. This right is in addition to the relief provided under the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019, which provides that a woman who has been subjected to triple talaq is entitled to earn maintenance from her husband. It should be noted that the 2019 Act criminalised the practice of triple talaq, but the Act was struck down by the Supreme Court in 2017. The bench, comprising Justices BV Nagarathna and Augustin George Masih, decided the issue of whether a Muslim woman could avail herself of Section 125 of the Code of Criminal Procedure to claim maintenance. The judgement written by Justice Nagarathna answered the question in the affirmative and discussed the rights of a woman who has been wrongfully divorced. "If the divorce is invalid and illegal, such a Muslim woman can also seek relief under Section 125 of the CrPC," Justice Nagaratna said. The judgment provides that in case of illegal divorce under the provisions of the 2019 Act, i) the facility under Section 5 of the Act can be availed to apply for maintenance or, at the option of the Muslim woman, to apply for relief under Section 125 of the CrPC.

i) If, during the pendency of a petition filed under Section 125 of the CrPC, a Muslim woman becomes "divorced", she can file an appeal under Section 125 of the CrPC or file a petition under the 2019 Act. iii) The provisions of the 2019 Act provide an additional remedy rather than an exclusion from Section 125 of the CrPC. The court also held that a Muslim woman married under the Special Marriage Act, 1954 is also entitled to invoke Section 125 of the CrPC.
