India, Austria push for end to conflict in Ukraine
During his visit to Austria, Prime Minister Modi reiterated India's position on the Ukraine crisis and stressed the need for dialogue and diplomacy for peace and stability.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday reiterated India's position that a solution to the Ukraine crisis will not be found on the battlefield and conveyed New Delhi's assessment of the conflict.
The Ukrainian war played a key role in Modi's meeting with Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer, who is visiting Vienna for the first time in 41 years. The two sides also discussed ways to strengthen cooperation in areas such as trade, investment, science and technology, green energy and climate change.
Prime Minister Modi on Tuesday reiterated the message he had conveyed to Russian President Vladimir Putin in a televised address from the Kremlin: peace talks under the shadow of arms cannot succeed and the warring parties must return to dialogue. Nehamel said his meeting with Modi was an opportunity to get India's assessment of the situation and "make Europe's concerns known to India."
"Prime Minister Nehamel and I discussed at length the ongoing conflicts around the world, be it the Ukraine conflict or the situation in West Asia. As I have said before, this is not the time for war. No problem can be solved on the battlefield," Modi said in Hindi after the meeting.
"Loss of innocent lives anywhere is unacceptable. "India and Austria attach great importance to dialogue and diplomacy to restore peace and stability as soon as possible. We are both ready to offer all cooperation to achieve this," he said.
Nehamer said India and Austria share common concerns about the geopolitical situation and the two leaders had "very intensive discussions on Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine." Referring to Modi's just-concluded visit to Russia, Nehamer said, "It was particularly important for me to hear the Prime Minister's personal assessment of Russia's intentions regarding the peace process."
