Kamala Harris has enough Democratic delegates to earn US presidential nomination
Kamala Harris has received at least 2,579 delegate endorsements so far, more than the 1,976 delegates needed to win on the first ballot.
US Vice President Kamala Harris has received enough Democratic delegate endorsements to secure the party's presidential nomination.
Several state delegations, including those from the vice president's home states of Texas and California, met late Monday to reiterate their support for Harris.
According to an Associated Press tally, Harris has received at least 2,579 delegate endorsements so far, more than the 1,976 delegates needed to win on the first ballot.
California Democratic Party Chair Rusty Hicks said 75 to 80 percent of the state delegation has called and unanimously endorsed Harris.

"I haven't heard anyone mention or call for another candidate," Hicks told The Associated Press. "Tonight's vote was crucial."
The development came a day after U.S. President Joe Biden made an extraordinary decision to end his reelection campaign and endorse Kamala Harris as the Democratic candidate to succeed him in the presidential race.
Biden, 80, has been under immense pressure after his performance in the debate with 78-year-old Donald Trump revealed age-related flaws, prompting calls from party elders, campaign officials, donors and voters to make way for a younger candidate. After resisting for three weeks, Biden finally caved in to the pressure after seeing polls showing he had no chance of winning.
So far, no other Democrats have announced they will seek the party's nomination.
After receiving Biden's endorsement, Harris said she intended to run for and win the nomination.
"I am honored by the President's endorsement and intend to run for and win this nomination. Over the past year, I have traveled across the country speaking to the American people about the clear choice in this crucial election, and I will continue to do so in the coming days and weeks," Harris said. "I will do everything in my power to unite the Democratic Party and our country to defeat Donald Trump."
