UPSC chairman Manoj Soni resigns five years before term ends, cites ‘personal reasons’

Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) chairman Manoj Soni has tendered his resignation five years ahead of the scheduled expiry of his term. In his resignation letter, Soni said he was stepping down for "personal reasons", PTI reported.

Manoj Soni submitted his resignation from the chairmanship about two weeks ago, PTI reported, citing sources, but his resignation is yet to be accepted by the top leadership.

His resignation is "in no way connected with the controversies and allegations surrounding the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) following the revelation of the issue of IAS probationary officer Puja Khedkar", the paper said.

Soni will take over as UPSC chairman on May 16, 2023, and his term will end on May 15, 2029. He submitted his resignation five years before the expiry of his term. Though he was made chairman, sources said he was not interested in taking over the post and wanted to be succeeded. But his request fell on deaf ears then. Soni now wants to devote more time to "socio-religious activities", the people said.
