"Are my children not entitled to work in their hometown?" PhonePe Founder Criticizes Karnataka's Private Sector Quota Act
Karnataka government shelvs law making reservation mandatory for locals in private sector
PhonePe Founder and CEO Sameer Nigam criticizes Karnataka government's move to support locals The mandate for 100% reservation has been heavily criticised and described as a "disgrace". Citing the example of his father, who served in the Indian Navy, Nigam asked, "Are his children not entitled to work in Karnataka as per the law?"
"I am 46 years old. I have not lived outside the state for over 15 years. My father served in the Indian Navy. It has been published across the country. Why can't his children get a job in Karnataka? I will start a company. Create 25,000+ jobs across India! Are my children not eligible to work in their hometown? What a shame," the PhonePe founder wrote in an X-post.
However, the Karnataka government has shelved the Bill making reservation mandatory for locals in the private sector. The Karnataka Cabinet will discuss the issue in detail in its next meeting and decide on further course of action. The development comes amid strong backlash against the Bill.
"The Cabinet-approved Bill to provide reservation in Kannadiga islands to private sector organisations, industries and companies has been temporarily shelved. It will be reviewed and decided in the next few days," Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said in a post.
Earlier in the day, the Karnataka Cabinet passed a bill making it mandatory for 100 percent C and D jobs in the private sector to be reserved for Kannadigas (locals). The move received widespread support among IT companies. Nasscom has expressed concern about the bill, saying it could stifle the industry's growth, hit jobs and force companies to relocate.
