Over 300 Students return Home as 105 Bangladeshis killed in Protests
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's office declared a nationwide curfew on Friday and sent troops to maintain order as protests intensified, AFP reported. According to the information obtained, the death toll reached 105 people. Meanwhile, 245 Indians, including 125 Indian students and 13 Nepalese, will return to India from Bangladesh via the land border tonight. Bangladeshi radio stations were taken off the air, communications were disrupted, and many news sites and social media accounts were closed. Reuters witnesses said international calls and online searches were unreachable.
Law Minister Anisul Hook said the government was willing to meet with the opposition. Protesters said they were willing to negotiate, the Associated Press reported. But opposition leader Nasheed Islam told Reuters that "negotiations and murders do not go together... We cannot have dialogue by stepping on corpses." Meanwhile, the federal government said the country's cell phone service was temporarily suspended following the attack.
The Ministry of External Affairs on Friday asked Indians in Bangladesh to follow the advice of the Indian High Commission in Dhaka asking them to avoid local travel and reduce the number of people going outside their homes during violent attacks. MEA Advisory also informed that the High Commission and High Commission will contact them through a helpline to get the necessary assistance.
