Netanyahu vows 'total victory' against Hamas in US Congress speech amid protests

Benjamin Netanyahu sketched a vague outline of a plan for a 'deradicalised' post-war Gaza in a speech to Congress, which was boycotted by dozens of Democrats as thousands of pro-Palestinian protesters demonstrated outside the US Capitol.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed “total victory” against Hamas and condemned American opponents of the war in Gaza on Wednesday in a scathing speech to Congress boycotted by dozens of Democratic lawmakers and protested by thousands seeking an end to the war and the humanitarian crisis created by it.

Netanyahu’s combative speech offered no sign that his visit to the United States — his first trip abroad since the war started — could bring some progress in months of US-led mediation for a cease-fire and hostage-release, as the Biden administration has hoped. Speaking for nearly an hour to frequent applause from US lawmakers, as well as stony silence from many leading Democrats in the chamber, Netanyahu said the US has a shared interest in his country's fight against Hamas and other Iran-backed armed groups. “America and Israel must stand together. "When we are united, a very simple thing happens: we win and they lose," Netanyahu said, wearing a yellow pin in solidarity with Israeli hostages held by Hamas.

But the Israeli president soon struck a darker tone, pointing to demonstrations in the streets outside the parliament building and mocking those protesting the war on college campuses and across the United States. He called the demonstrators "useful fools" for opponents of Israel.

Some of the hostages released from Gaza and the families of those still being held listened in on the House of Representatives chamber. Security forces cleared demonstrators from a gallery where they had stood to display T-shirts bearing slogans calling for an end to the war and the release of the remaining hostages.
