Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warns: Hezbollah will "pay a heavy price" for attack on Golan Heights

However, Hezbollah denies any involvement in the rocket attack that killed 11 young soccer players in the Druze village of Majdal Shams.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has warned Hezbollah that it will "pay a heavy price" for Saturday's rocket attack that killed 11 young people in Israeli-controlled Golan Heights areas.

According to a statement from the Israeli Prime Minister's Office, Netanyahu told local community leaders that "Israel will not tolerate this brutal attack and Hezbollah will pay a heavy price that it has never paid before."

In addition, the Israeli Prime Minister's Office announced that Netanyahu has decided to return "as soon as possible" from the United States, where he met with President Joe Biden earlier this week and addressed the U.S. Congress.


Meanwhile, the Israeli military has promised to prepare a "counterattack" against Hezbollah.


"This attack shows the true face of Hezbollah, a terrorist organization that targets and kills kids playing soccer on a Saturday night," Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesman Maj. Gen. Daniel Hagari said in a video message.


"As athletes from around the world compete at the #Olympics2024, Hezbollah is murdering the next generation of Israeli athletes. A group of children enjoying one of life's simplest pleasures was murdered in cold blood when a Hezbollah rocket landed on the soccer field of the Druze village of Majdal Shams in the Golan Heights," another IDF post said.


But Lebanon-based Hezbollah denied it was behind the deadly attack.


The militant group said its military wing, the Islamic Resistance Movement, "had nothing to do with the incident."


The rocket attack came after an Israeli military strike killed four Hezbollah militants in the southern Lebanese village of Kfar Kila, triggering retaliatory attacks by the group, which has been engaged in near-daily gun battles with Israeli forces since the start of the Gaza war.
