In the midst of the stand-off with protesting doctors over the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her willingness to resign from her position.
The chief minister stated her lack of concern for her position and emphasized her primary focus on achieving justice in the case. She affirmed her readiness to step down from the role of chief minister of West Bengal. I do not have any concerns regarding the post. "I seek justice, my sole focus is on ensuring justice is served," she stated.
On September 12, the West Bengal government scheduled a meeting at 5 pm to resolve the deadlock related to the RG Kar hospital incident. However, the protesters' request for live telecast of the discussions was denied by the government. The medical personnel mentioned that they will not participate in the meeting unless live-streaming is permitted, as stated by protester Aniket Mahato to news agency PTI. "We have been waiting for over two hours to meet our doctor colleagues who were expected to be present here." We sent a letter to them and received a response confirming their intention to attend.
After awaiting their confirmation, we extended an invitation to them. However, it has been two hours and we have not received any communication from them. We requested their presence with a receptive attitude to engage in a discussion about any matter. "Solutions can only be obtained through dialogues," expressed Benerjee. The protests began after the body of a postgraduate trainee doctor was found at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) hosted an ‘Iftar party’ in response to backlash from the Opposition following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s attendance at Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud’s home for Ganesh Puja. In a reminiscent turn, BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla pointed out that former PM Manmohan Singh had invited then CJI KG Balakrishnan to an Iftar party back in 2009, sharing old photos of the event as evidence. This move aimed to challenge the perception of the judiciary's safety during the previous administrations. However, his remarks mentioned that when Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in Ganesh Puja at the Chief Justice's residence, the perception emerged that the "integrity of the judiciary has been compromised."
Member of Parliament from the Bharatiya Janata Party, Sambit Patra, criticized the Opposition for politicizing the incident and questioned whether the former Prime Minister attended Iftar gatherings with the previous Chief Justice of India.
"The different branches of democracy should coordinate and show respect towards each other. They should not view each other as adversaries. It is a defining characteristic of democracy that diverse behaviors are exhibited while on and off duty," he stated during a press briefing.
In reference to a recent photograph featuring Congress leader Rahul Gandhi alongside US Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, Sambit Patra remarked, "There is objection to the Prime Minister meeting the Chief Justice, yet no objection when Rahul Gandhi interacts with Ilhan Omar, the Premier of China, and signs Memorandums of Understanding... They raise concerns about Ganesh Puja, but did former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh not attend Iftaar parties? Just as Iftaar is a festival, Ganpati is also a festival, so why the double standard?"
Union Minister of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, Bhupendra Yadav, also criticized the Opposition for turning the incident into a political issue.
"Ganpati represents the deity of new beginnings. He embodies a representation of optimism. The collaboration of various sectors of the nation to commemorate the greatness of Ganesha is a positive indicator of a robust democracy, and is in line with our cultural values that emphasize collective celebration. Those who harbor negativity are encouraged to refrain from making disparaging remarks about events that hold significance in India's rich traditions for the betterment of society and religious harmony," he stated on X. "Please avoid diminishing the importance of our festivals," the minister added. Opposition queries Modi's visit to CJI's residence. A political dispute arose on Thursday regarding Modi's visit to CJI Chandrachud's home, as opposition figures, notably from the Shiv Sena (UBT), expressed apprehensions about the potential impact of the meeting on the judiciary's autonomy.

A video showed BJP leader Shehzad Poonawalla condemning Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi and other members of the INDI Alliance for politicizing the Prime Minister's visit to the Chief Justice of India's residence.
Poonawalla censured Chaturvedi for making what he described as a shocking, disgraceful, and reprehensible accusation against Chief Justice of India, Chandrachud Ji. His offense is that Prime Minister Modi visited his residence for Ganesh Puja, a customary practice during Ganesh Chaturthi where people visit each other's homes as part of their cultural traditions. The politicization of a simple puja by Priyanka Chaturvedi and the baseless accusations against the Chief Justice of India for not accommodating her personal timetable in a specific case is alarming. The Uddhav Sena, familiar with such cultural norms, should understand this well. "This constitutes contempt of court," he declared.
"It is alarming, it is unacceptable, it undermines the judiciary, the Supreme Court, and the Chief Justice of India, all because Prime Minister Modi has visited as he would visit the homes of many others for the Ganesh Puja," Poonawalla stated in the video.
