Baba Siddiki Killed in Mumbai by unidentified shooters
Sources have revealed that the two individuals arrested in connection with the murder of former Maharashtra minister Baba Siddique have reportedly identified themselves as members of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. Police have not yet confirmed the claim, and the gang has not taken responsibility for the murder that has raised security concerns before the Maharashtra state elections.
Baba Siddique, a 66-year-old influential politician affiliated with the Ajit Pawar faction of the Nationalist Congress Party and a former three-time MLA from Bandra East, was fatally shot in Bandra yesterday. He was struck by at least six bullets near his son's office, four of which hit him in the chest. Law enforcement officials believe the incident is a planned homicide and have assembled four specialized investigative units to examine the matter.
The attack, which occurred during the celebration of Dussehra, was executed by a trio of individuals. Two individuals, Karnail Singh from Haryana and Dharamraj Kashyap from Uttar Pradesh, have been apprehended, while the third suspect remains at large. Law enforcement officers suspect that someone was supplying them with information regarding Mr. Siddique's whereabouts. Two individuals, who were arrested and questioned by the Mumbai Police Crime Branch, claimed that they had been scouting the shooting location in Bandra East for approximately a month. According to sources in the crime branch, the three accused arrived at the spot in an auto rickshaw the previous night and waited before the shooting occurred. The police are investigating the case from two perspectives, one involving the Bishnoi gang and the other linked to a slum rehabilitation matter.
Mr. Siddique's connection to Bollywood star Salman Khan, who had reportedly received threats from Lawrence Bishnoi, has led to suspicions of the Bishnoi gang's involvement. Sources close to the victim allege receiving a death threat 15 days ago, resulting in being placed under 'Y' category security cover.
Despite this, Mr. Siddique reportedly did not disclose any threats from the Bishnoi gang to the police.
Central agencies are cooperating with Mumbai Police, while investigations are also underway in Gujarat and Delhi.
Lawrence Bishnoi, who is incarcerated in a Gujarat jail for multiple criminal offenses, and his gang continue to attract attention for reportedly demanding ransom from businessmen. Salman Khan is a subject of interest due to the infamous 1998 black buck hunting case.

Kamala Harris' ‘excellent health’ update to challenge Donald Trump's fitness for office
Vice President Kamala Harris' campaign has released a statement affirming her excellent health, aimed at questioning Donald Trump's fitness for office. According to her physician, Dr. Joshua R., Harris possesses the necessary physical and mental resiliency to effectively carry out presidential duties.
In the statement, Simmons, 59, provided detailed information regarding her blood pressure, blood work, and seasonal allergies. She stated that she follows a very healthy diet and leads an active lifestyle. Simmons stated that Harris' most recent physical examination in April was deemed "unremarkable." He also mentioned that she has been receiving allergen immunotherapy treatment for the past three years, resulting in an improvement in her seasonal allergy symptoms and eliminating the need for regular medication except for occasional drugs for rhinitis.
The disclosure of Harris' medical history by her campaign aligns with the traditional practice followed by nominees from both political parties, as seen in Trump's presidency and previous White House campaigns. Trump, 78, initially expressed willingness to release his medical records in an interview with CBS News in August, but has since rejected media requests to do so. Following criticisms from the Republican nominee regarding President Joe Biden's age and mental capacity, some Democrats are now questioning Trump's cognitive abilities. Former Obama White House communications director Dan Pfeiffer suggested on the Pod Save America podcast last week that Trump's mental sharpness has declined since his first presidential campaign launch in 2015, now appearing "incoherent."

Seven months after his acquittal in UAPA case, human rights activist Dr GN Saibaba dies
Former Delhi University professor and activist Dr. Gokarakonda Naga Saibaba passed away on Saturday, October 12, only seven months after being acquitted in a case involving alleged links to Maoists. Saibaba, previously emblematic of state oppression, passed away at the Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) in Hyderabad following a reported cardiac arrest. His age was 58. Throughout his ten-year imprisonment, Saibaba expressed dissatisfaction with the severe mistreatment and abuse he endured at the hands of prison officials.
Despite his permanent polio-paralysis, Saibaba, an English professor at Delhi University's Ram Lal Anand College, revealed to the media that even his medication had been denied by jail authorities after his acquittal. He and five others were acquitted by the Bombay High Court in March. He was detained and charged under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) for suspected links to the prohibited Communist Party of India (Maoist). The State was unable to substantiate the allegations against him.
A prominent figure on the Left, the late Delhi University professor's passing has left a significant gap in the realm of human rights advocacy, especially with numerous political prisoners still being held under the UAPA.
Hailing from Amalapuram in Andhra Pradesh's Konaseema district, Dr. Saibaba was a staunch advocate for Adivasi rights, a vocal opponent of state oppression, and had voiced his opposition to the detainment of Stan Swamy and various other political activists. He also advocated for the Telangana statehood movement. Since his release, Saibaba has expressed in multiple speeches and interviews that his survival was nothing short of a miracle.
Referring to it as his "Agni pariksha" or trial by fire, he revealed the significant impact on his health that resulted from his time in solitary confinement. Saibaba, a poet, participated in various political campaigns, with his most notable involvement being his criticism of Operation Greenhunt in 2009, a paramilitary operation by the Congress Union government that infringed upon the rights and livelihoods of Adivasis in the 'red corridor'.
He has had a collection of his prison poems and letters published under the title "Why do you fear my way so much?" Saibaba is survived by his wife, Vasantha Kumari, and their 26-year-old daughter, Manjeera.

Russia has opted for India instead of China to build its advanced non-nuclear icebreaker ships
Russia has opted for India instead of China to build its advanced non-nuclear icebreaker ships. This decision is made in the context of Russia's efforts to enhance its Northern Sea Route (NSR) and address the challenges stemming from Western sanctions.
The collaboration between India and Russia not only strengthens their bilateral relations but also establishes India as a significant player in Arctic affairs. To bolster maritime cooperation, the Indian government is currently engaged in discussions with two shipbuilders—a state-owned one and a private one—to build four non-nuclear icebreaker ships, with a total value exceeding Rs 6,000 crores ($750 million).
As per a report by ET Infra, this initiative aims to provide support to ROSATOM, Russia's state-owned nuclear energy company, by identifying suitable shipyards in India for the project, particularly in light of the US sanctions. An official cited in the ET Infra report stated that "ROSATOM intends to construct four non-nuclear icebreaker ships in India." The shipbuilding order is in the final stages of processing at the request of both the Indian and Russian governments.
Additionally, an official, who requested anonymity, indicated that India and Russia are exploring a memorandum of understanding for shipbuilding and the maintenance of Russian vessels at Indian shipyards, as well as for the training of Indian seafarers in polar waters. These discussions took place during the inaugural meeting of the ‘Joint Working Group on Cooperation in the Northern Sea Route between Russia and India.’ To facilitate these efforts, the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) and India’s Enso Group have reached an agreement to jointly invest up to Rs 1,800 crore (approximately $225 million) in the development of shipbuilding infrastructure.
