Seven months after his acquittal in UAPA case, human rights activist Dr GN Saibaba dies

Former Delhi University professor and activist Dr. Gokarakonda Naga Saibaba passed away on Saturday, October 12, only seven months after being acquitted in a case involving alleged links to Maoists. Saibaba, previously emblematic of state oppression, passed away at the Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) in Hyderabad following a reported cardiac arrest. His age was 58. Throughout his ten-year imprisonment, Saibaba expressed dissatisfaction with the severe mistreatment and abuse he endured at the hands of prison officials.

Despite his permanent polio-paralysis, Saibaba, an English professor at Delhi University's Ram Lal Anand College, revealed to the media that even his medication had been denied by jail authorities after his acquittal. He and five others were acquitted by the Bombay High Court in March. He was detained and charged under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) for suspected links to the prohibited Communist Party of India (Maoist). The State was unable to substantiate the allegations against him.

A prominent figure on the Left, the late Delhi University professor's passing has left a significant gap in the realm of human rights advocacy, especially with numerous political prisoners still being held under the UAPA.

Hailing from Amalapuram in Andhra Pradesh's Konaseema district, Dr. Saibaba was a staunch advocate for Adivasi rights, a vocal opponent of state oppression, and had voiced his opposition to the detainment of Stan Swamy and various other political activists. He also advocated for the Telangana statehood movement. Since his release, Saibaba has expressed in multiple speeches and interviews that his survival was nothing short of a miracle.

Referring to it as his "Agni pariksha" or trial by fire, he revealed the significant impact on his health that resulted from his time in solitary confinement. Saibaba, a poet, participated in various political campaigns, with his most notable involvement being his criticism of Operation Greenhunt in 2009, a paramilitary operation by the Congress Union government that infringed upon the rights and livelihoods of Adivasis in the 'red corridor'.

He has had a collection of his prison poems and letters published under the title "Why do you fear my way so much?" Saibaba is survived by his wife, Vasantha Kumari, and their 26-year-old daughter, Manjeera.
