"Operation 'Northern Arrows' to Continue": Israeli Ground Raids Commence in Lebanon

The US was advised by Israeli officials that they were engaging in "limited operations" to strike Hezbollah infrastructure near the border.

Israeli forces have initiated "limited, targeted, and localized" ground operations in Lebanon following the assassination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in an airstrike, escalating tensions in the Middle East.

Key points in this development:

- Ground raids are aimed at Hezbollah infrastructure in southern Lebanese villages near the border, presenting a direct threat to Israeli communities in the north, as stated by the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF), who have asserted that Operation "Northern Arrows" will persist alongside conflicts in Gaza and other regions.

- At least six strikes were carried out in southern Beirut by Israel after instructing residents to evacuate, according to a Lebanese official. An official reported that a Palestinian camp in south Lebanon was impacted by the airstrikes. In his first televised address following Nasrallah's death, Hezbollah's deputy leader Naim Qassem stated that they are prepared in the event that Israel "chooses to engage in ground operations". The group has stated in a press release that they "engaged with" Israeli soldiers in orchards by the Lebanese border.

International leaders, such as the United Nations Secretary-General and US President Joe Biden, have discouraged a land invasion of Lebanon and urged for a cessation of hostilities.

Despite global appeals for a ceasefire, Israel and Hezbollah, the governing party in Lebanon, have remained obstinate and disregarded these calls. Israeli airstrikes have been targeting Beirut, resulting in the deaths of hundreds and causing thousands to seek refuge, as reported by authorities in Lebanon. Individuals residing in southern Beirut were instructed to evacuate by the Israeli military last night. "You are in close proximity to the activities and resources associated with the terrorist organization Hezbollah." "In order to ensure the safety of yourself and your family members, it is imperative that you evacuate the buildings promptly and maintain a safe distance from them," stated Avichay Adraee, the military spokesman for the group.

Hassan Nasrallah, formerly the leader of Hezbollah, was eliminated in a significant airstrike in Beirut on Friday. Israel has pledged that the conflict will persist. The assassination of Nasrallah was described as a significant measure, though not the ultimate one, by the defense minister.

Yoav Gallant, the Israeli Defense Minister, also issued a caution that they would deploy "every possible means" to engage in combat in northern Israel, adjacent to Lebanon - "via air, sea, and land."

At the same time, reports from state media indicate that three civilians lost their lives in Israeli airstrikes on Damascus. The official SANA agency reported that airstrikes and drone attacks originating from the Syrian Golan targeted various locations in Damascus. Israel's conflict with Hezbollah represents a pivot away from the ongoing fighting in Gaza involving Hamas operatives and Israeli forces. Hezbollah, supported by Iran, in Lebanon backs the Palestinian Hamas organization.
