For the first time, the United States deployed advanced B-2 Stealth Bombers in Yemen against the Houthis

For the first time, the United States deployed advanced B-2 Stealth Bombers in Yemen against the Houthis. The B-2 Spirit bomber, renowned for its stealth features and high payload capacity, can deliver a larger amount of ordnance than fighter jets. These airstrikes, conducted on Wednesday evening, aimed at hitting crucial underground weapons storage sites under the control of the Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen. The B-2 Spirit stealth bombers conducted strikes against Houthi targets, representing the inaugural deployment of these sophisticated aircraft in the Yemen conflict by the US.

The US Department of Defense verified that five Houthi weapons storage facilities, concealed deeply underground, were targeted during the operation. As per US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, the facilities served as storage for advanced conventional weapons utilized by the Houthis to pose a threat to civilian and military vessels in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.

Deployment Of B-2 Bombers

The B-2 Spirit bomber, renowned for its stealth capabilities and large payload, has the capacity to deliver a significantly higher amount of ordnance in comparison to fighter jets. The B-2 provides the US military with a unique capacity to target valuable high-value assets that are heavily fortified or expertly concealed. Mr. Austin clarified that the strikes were authorized under the directive of President Joe Biden. "This represented a distinct illustration of the United States' capability to pinpoint facilities that our enemies aim to shield from attack, regardless of how deeply concealed or fortified," expressed Mr. Austin.

Growing Regional Tensions

The strikes' timing coincides with escalating tensions in the Middle East, as US allies, notably Israel, confront persistent menaces from Iran and its diverse regional surrogates. The Houthis, based in Yemen, have continuously carried out assaults on both commercial shipping and military vessels, causing disruptions to a major global maritime trade pathway. Lately, there has been a rise in attacks carried out by the group, including the use of ballistic and cruise missiles, as well as drones, targeting US Navy ships and international vessels.

The Houthis' actions in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, where they have targeted ships using weapons from underground storage sites, have sparked concerns about the safety of major trade routes and the risk of environmental disasters. In August, there was an incident involving a Greek-flagged vessel that was attacked, resulting in an oil spill and causing significant environmental apprehensions. In September, the Houthis intensified their efforts by launching around twenty-four ballistic and cruise missiles, in addition to drones, directed at three US Navy destroyers. While none of the missiles successfully hit their intended targets, the attacks did lead to heightened military engagement by US forces in the area. Houthi Attacks Linked to Regional Conflicts

The Houthis, supported by Iran, have portrayed their actions as part of a larger alliance with organizations such as Hamas and Hezbollah, which are currently involved in tensions with Israel. After a missile strike in September targeted deep within Israel, the Houthis have publicly declared their backing for these groups. Despite the missile breaking apart in the air and resulting in no injuries, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu cautioned that the Houthis would face severe consequences for their actions. Israeli airstrikes retaliated by targeting Houthi positions in Yemen following the incident.
