Ten Years Without Communication, Followed By a Brief 20-Second Exchange, India and Pakistan No Longer Linked
S Jaishankar's Visit to Pakistan: During the official dinner for SCO leaders, the two officials greeted each other with a handshake and exchanged pleasantries. A brief exchange took place lasting less than twenty seconds during the interaction. S Jaishankar, currently in Pakistan for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation or SCO Summit hosted by Islamabad, briefly interacted with Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at an official dinner for summit attendees. The two leaders exchanged pleasantries and shook hands as Mr. Sharif welcomed Mr. Jaishankar to the dinner for SCO leaders. Limited communication occurred during the brief encounter lasting under twenty seconds.
Relations between India and Pakistan have been minimal for the past decade due to terrorist attacks on Indian military sites by groups based in Pakistan in 2015 and 2016. India, which has long sought peace and stability in the region, has explicitly conveyed to Pakistan the stance that "terrorism and dialogue cannot coexist" and that "diplomacy can progress only in a terrorism-free atmosphere."
NEARLY A DECADE OF NO DIALOGUE
Mr. Jaishankar's trip to Pakistan marks the initial visit by an Indian minister in almost a decade. The most recent visit by an Indian Foreign Minister occurred when Sushma Swaraj, the predecessor of Mr. Jaishankar, traveled to Islamabad for a conference on Afghanistan. Mr. Jaishankar, who was serving as the foreign secretary at the time, accompanied the minister on her official visit.
