The cyclone made landfall between Bhitarkanika in the Kendrapara district and Dhamra in Bhadrak, with a wind speed of approximately 110 kmph. Here are key points about Cyclone Dana:
The landfall process of Cyclone Dana commenced on the Odisha coast around midnight, affecting districts such as Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Balasore, and Jagatsinghpur with wind speeds of 110 kmph and heavy rain.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) stated that the landfall process would continue for the next 1-2 hours, as of 6 am. Dana, named by Qatar, is expected to gradually weaken into a cyclonic storm by today forenoon.
Uprooted trees were reported at the office of the Special Relief Commissioner in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. The impact of the cyclone was also felt in East Midnapore and Kolkata in West Bengal. Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata, closed as a precaution, will resume operations at 9:00 am today.
Efforts were made in Odisha and West Bengal to evacuate thousands of people, close schools, cancel over 400 trains, and suspend flight operations in preparation for the severe cyclonic storm. The government of Odisha, led by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, disclosed that around 5.8 lakh individuals were evacuated, and 385 rescue teams including NDRF, ODRAF, fire service, and forest staff were deployed.
Approximately 150 platoons (each consisting of 30 personnel) from Odisha Police have been deployed for rescue operations, road clearance, and other on-ground activities.
In West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee reported that 2,43,374 individuals are seeking shelter in camps.
Additionally, she spent the entire night of Thursday at the state secretariat overseeing the situation firsthand.
