Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh assumed leadership of the Indian Air Force (IAF) on September 30 amidst challenges in India's development of LCA Tejas MK1A fighters, MRFA, and Aero Engines.
The flamboyant officer, boasting more than 5,000 hours of flying experience, garnered attention in July when he argued that prioritizing 'Self-Reliance' should not compromise national defense. Air Chief Marshal Singh made this statement amid the Indian Air Force's reduced squadron strength of 32 squadrons, as compared to the authorized strength of 42.
The most recent procurement by the military included 36 Rafale fighter jets, a decrease from the initial intention to acquire 126 jets. "Self-reliance cannot be attained at the expense of our national security." "The Vice Chief of the Air Staff, Singh, noted that the capability gap is continuously expanding due to the rapid increase in numbers and adoption of new technologies by our adversaries." He recommended that the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) collaborate with private sector entities to narrow this gap. The Indian Air Force (IAF) had previously ordered indigenous LCA Mk1A aircraft, but the delivery has been delayed due to engine supply issues from the US. As the force continues to decommission its Soviet-era MiG-21 fighter jets, this development arises. The planned retirement of the last two squadrons of MiG-21 bis aircraft is scheduled for the year 2025.
