The mayor of Chilpancingo, the capital of Mexico's violence-plagued state of Guerrero, traveled alone to an out-of-town meeting before he was killed, Mexico's security minister said on Tuesday about a murder which has shocked the country.

Alejandro Arcos, of Mexico's main opposition alliance, had only taken office six days earlier. Photos were distributed on Sunday through WhatsApp and Mexican media platforms showing a decapitated head placed on a pick-up truck, allegedly belonging to Arcos. This gruesome incident took place shortly before President Claudia Sheinbaum revealed her security strategy to address violent crime. Security Minister Omar Garcia Harfuch stated during a press briefing that an investigation indicated Arcos had left Chilpancingo in his pickup truck unaccompanied, en route to Petaquillas. There was no request made by Arcos for security protection from the federal government, according to Garcia Harfuch. It is known that he was headed to a specific meeting without any company.
