Israel escalates airstrikes, targets south Beirut; over 400 Hezbollah militants eliminated to date

Lebanon crisis: Israel further intensifies bombardment in Lebanon, launching twelve airstrikes on Beirut's southern suburb on Saturday. Additionally, Israel struck a Palestinian refugee camp in the north for the first time.

Local media reported that Lebanese officials described some of the strikes as "very violent." Israeli enemy warplanes carried out four very violent strikes on the southern suburbs of Beirut, along with one strike on the Chweifat area, as reported by Lebanon's National News Agency and confirmed by AFP. This escalation of attacks coincides with reports in Israeli media about military preparations for a potentially "significant" strike on Tehran, following an earlier barrage of approximately 200 missiles on Israeli targets. The recent strikes in Beirut on Saturday night caused loud explosions throughout the city and illuminated the sky with flashes of red and white for nearly half an hour.

The incidents occurred during a period of sustained Israeli bombings in Beirut, a recognized stronghold of the Iran-supported militant organization Hezbollah. The Israeli armed forces reported the elimination of over 400 Hezbollah combatants following the commencement of ground maneuvers in southern Lebanon. "Since the commencement of the ground operation, our forces have successfully neutralized approximately 440 terrorists through ground and aerial operations, which includes the elimination of 30 commanders of different hierarchies," Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, Israeli military spokesman, stated during a televised briefing.

Amid the continued airstrikes, the Israeli army has reiterated its call for residents to evacuate from the southern suburbs of Beirut." "For the safety of yourself and your family, it is imperative that you evacuate the specified buildings and their vicinity and distance yourselves by a minimum of 500 meters," stated spokesperson Avichay Adraee, quoted by AFP. According to Lebanese authorities, Hashem Safiddine, the potential successor to the deceased Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, has been unresponsive since Friday, as reported by Reuters. During its anti-Iranian Lebanon group campaign, Israel conducted a sizable attack on Beirut's southern suburbs targeting Safiddine on Thursday night. In Lebanon, numerous individuals, including Palestinian refugees, persisted in escaping the escalating conflict in the area.

Simultaneously, global demonstrations commemorated the upcoming anniversary of the Gaza war's commencement. The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) reported the dismantling of a 250-meter terrorist tunnel in southern Lebanon on Saturday. Per the Israeli military, the tunnel was intended for use in an invasion of Israel by Hezbollah's Radwan Forces. Israel is currently at a heightened state of readiness in anticipation of the anniversary of Hamas's October 7 attack, which resulted in the deaths of at least 1,200 Israelis and sparked a significant conflict. Prior to October 7, Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, a spokesman for the Israeli military, stated during a televised briefing that additional forces had been prepared in anticipation of potential attacks on the domestic front.

French President Emmanuel Macron urged a cessation of arms shipments to Israel for deployment in Gaza, while also condemning Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's deployment of troops for ground operations in Lebanon. Netanyahu reacted strongly to Macron's statements, labeling them as "shameful". "In the battle against the forces of savagery led by Iran, it is imperative for all civilized nations to unequivocally support Israel." However, President Macron and several other western leaders are currently advocating for an arms embargo on Israel.

It is disappointing to see their actions. Is Iran implementing an arms embargo on Hezbollah, the Houthis, Hamas, and other proxies? No, it is not. The Axis of Terror remains united, while nations claiming to oppose this coalition call for an arms embargo against Israel. Netanyahu expressed his disappointment, stating, "What a disgrace."

In accordance with the guidance of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the nation has initiated a national relief campaign to aid Lebanon and its citizens during the current crisis, known as "UAE stands with Lebanon," as reported by ANI.

In response to the UAE President's instructions to deliver a prompt USD 100 million aid package to Lebanon, the UAE collaborated with the World Health Organisation (WHO) to send a plane carrying 40 tons of urgent medical assistance to Lebanon.
