India has consistently acted as the primary responder: Prime Minister Modi Holds Meeting with Maldives President Muizzu

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu on Monday, reaffirming New Delhi's status as a close ally of the island nation.

He highlighted his 'neighbourhood first' foreign policy, emphasizing India's role as the initial responder to financial and medical crises affecting Male. This includes providing nearly six lakh people with Covid vaccines during the pandemic.

Prime Minister Modi also stressed the Maldives' significance in ensuring security in the Indian Ocean Region. This issue gained attention within the Indian government following President Muizzu's election victory last year, where he was viewed as a pro-China leader running on an 'India out' platform. "Whether it is essential goods, Covid vaccines, or clean water... "We have maintained good relations with our neighbors," he stated.

He also mentioned that India had recently opened an airport, delivered 700 social housing units, and intends to assist in the development of a new port. The speaker mentioned that a drinking water project has been implemented on 28 Maldivian islands, benefiting over 30,000 people with access to clean water. Additionally, discussions were held between India and Maldives regarding the establishment of consulates in Addu and Bengaluru, as stated by the Prime Minister. Mr. Modi's remarks followed his hosting of President Muizzu for a bilateral meeting in Delhi this afternoon. Images of the two leaders shaking hands and smiling broadly, following a ceremonial reception by President Droupadi Murmu at Raj Bhavan, were shared by news agency ANI.
