BJP, steadfast on Devendra Fadnavis's name, rejects Bihar model

Maharashtra CM suspense set to conclude today? BJP, steadfast on Devendra Fadnavis's name, rejects Bihar model

In the midst of rigorous discussions within the Mahayuti coalition regarding who will assume the chief position in Maharashtra – Devendra Fadnavis or Eknath Shinde – the Bharatiya Janata Party signaled that there is no intention of mirroring the Bihar approach for the CM position in the state.

On Tuesday, Maharashtra chief minister Eknath Shinde stepped down in light of a constitutional requirement, yet the uncertainty surrounding the CM's role persisted.

BJP national spokesperson Prem Shukla stated to HT, “To begin with, the declaration to appoint Nitish Kumar as CM was made prior to the elections. In Maharashtra, no such obligation was established with the Shiv Sena. Furthermore, we allied with Janata Dal (United) in Bihar with the aim of helping the BJP penetrate that state, which did not materialize. Therefore, there is no chance of mirroring that situation in Maharashtra.”

Prem Shukla also told The Indian Express that the model relevant to Bihar does not apply to Maharashtra. “In Maharashtra, there exists no basis for such a commitment due to our robust organizational presence and leadership. Most importantly, the party has never guaranteed the continuation of Eknath Shinde as CM post-elections. Conversely, the top leadership consistently asserted during the elections that the conclusion regarding the CM would hinge on the electoral results.”

Former union minister and BJP’s election coordinator Raosaheb Danve countered assertions from some Sena leaders that Shinde had been assured the top position before the elections. “The procedure for selecting the CM has commenced. Two parties have already designated their legislative leaders, and the BJP will select one in the near future,” he mentioned.

Several BJP officials remarked that the push from Shiv Sena leaders for Shinde to obtain the top position has not been well-received by the central leadership. This was communicated to the party, resulting in the cancellation of a show of strength organized by Sena leaders at Varsha on Tuesday morning. “The BJP has informed Shinde that the party will hold onto the CM’s position,” stated a senior Sena leader.

Israel, Hezbollah accept ceasefire proposed by US, France: Joe Biden

A truce between Israel and the Hezbollah group backed by Iran is set to begin on Wednesday following the acceptance of a negotiated settlement facilitated by the United States and France, as stated by U.S. President Joe Biden on Tuesday. Biden delivered comments at the White House shortly after the security cabinet of Israel approved the deal with a vote of 10-1, noting that he had spoken with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel and caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati of Lebanon. The hostilities are expected to cease at 4 a.m. local time (0200 GMT), he indicated.

"This initiative is intended to be a definitive halt to hostilities," Biden mentioned. "The remnants of Hezbollah and other terrorist factions will be prohibited from posing any further threats to the security of Israel."

Biden explained that Israel will progressively withdraw its forces over a span of 60 days while the Lebanese army takes command of areas adjacent to its border with Israel to ensure that Hezbollah does not reconstruct its infrastructure in those regions. "Residents on both sides will soon have the ability to return to their neighborhoods safely," he remarked.

French President Emmanuel Macron celebrated the deal's signing on the social media platform X, referring to it as “the result of endeavors made over several months in collaboration with the Israeli and Lebanese authorities, alongside the United States.” Mikati from Lebanon released a statement expressing support for the agreement. Earlier, Foreign Minister Abdallah Bou Habib mentioned that the Lebanese army would be prepared to deploy at least 5,000 troops in southern Lebanon as Israeli forces remove themselves.

Netanyahu expressed his readiness to execute the ceasefire agreement and warned that he would respond vigorously to any breaches by Hezbollah.

Facing some dissent regarding the agreement from within his coalition government, Netanyahu stated that the ceasefire would provide an opportunity for Israel to concentrate on the threat from Iran, replenish exhausted ammunition supplies, allow the military a respite, and isolate Hamas, the militant group responsible for instigating conflict in the region when it launched an attack on Israel from Gaza last year.

‘Jobs are at risk’: Donald Trump’s 25% tariff plan scares Canadian Jagmeet Singh

‘Jobs are at risk’: Donald Trump’s 25% tariff plan scares Jagmeet Singh, leader of Canada’s New Democratic Party (NDP)

Canada’s New Democratic Party (NDP) leader Jagmeet Singh on Tuesday called on the Liberal government led by Justin Trudeau to defend the country and fight back against U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s plan to impose a 25% tariff on goods from Canada and Mexico.

Hours after Trump announced the tariffs, the NDP leader took to Twitter to write: “Stand up and fight like hell. Canadian jobs are at risk.”

The Canadian prime minister's call for action comes after Trump vowed to impose tariffs on goods from Canada and Mexico, as well as a 10% tariff on imports from China in response to drug trafficking and illegal immigration.

Trump vows to impose tariffs

In a series of posts on his social media account Truth Social, Trump vowed to impose huge tariffs on all goods entering the United States from some of the country's largest trading partners. He also said the tariffs would remain in place until the two countries crack down on drugs and immigrants crossing the border illegally. "On January 20th, as one of my first of many executive orders, I will sign all necessary documents to impose on Mexico and Canada a 25% tariff on all products entering the United States and its ridiculously open borders," he wrote.
