‘Jobs are at risk’: Donald Trump’s 25% tariff plan scares Jagmeet Singh, leader of Canada’s New Democratic Party (NDP)
Canada’s New Democratic Party (NDP) leader Jagmeet Singh on Tuesday called on the Liberal government led by Justin Trudeau to defend the country and fight back against U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s plan to impose a 25% tariff on goods from Canada and Mexico.
Hours after Trump announced the tariffs, the NDP leader took to Twitter to write: “Stand up and fight like hell. Canadian jobs are at risk.”
The Canadian prime minister's call for action comes after Trump vowed to impose tariffs on goods from Canada and Mexico, as well as a 10% tariff on imports from China in response to drug trafficking and illegal immigration.
Trump vows to impose tariffs
In a series of posts on his social media account Truth Social, Trump vowed to impose huge tariffs on all goods entering the United States from some of the country's largest trading partners. He also said the tariffs would remain in place until the two countries crack down on drugs and immigrants crossing the border illegally. "On January 20th, as one of my first of many executive orders, I will sign all necessary documents to impose on Mexico and Canada a 25% tariff on all products entering the United States and its ridiculously open borders," he wrote.
