The central pollution watchdog explained that the deterioration was due to an "unprecedentedly dense" fog, labeling it as an "episodic event."
At 5am on Thursday, the AQI in Delhi's Anand Vihar was measured at 473 ('severe plus') based on data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). Aya Nagar, Ashok Vihar, and Wazirpur experienced the most severe air quality in Delhi, surpassing 400, placing it in the severe category. Despite this, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) chose not to implement Stage 3 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), which involves stopping primary school in-person classes and banning all construction activities.
