What is Russia's 'Oreshnik' missile?

President Vladimir Putin claimed that Russia had targeted Ukraine with a novel hypersonic medium-range ballistic missile in retaliation to Kyiv's utilization of U.S. and British missiles against Russia.

WHAT DID PUTIN SAY?

Putin stated on Thursday that the conflict in Ukraine was intensifying towards a worldwide war following the decision by the United States and Britain to permit Ukraine to launch missiles further into Russian territory. He also cautioned the Western nations that Moscow has the capability to retaliate.

In direct reaction to Ukraine's utilization of U.S. and British projectiles on November. At 21, he stated that Russia had fired an "Oreshnik" missile, one of its latest intermediate-range missiles, at a defense facility in the Ukrainian city of Dnipro.

The city is where the missile and space rocket company Pivdenmash is located, known as Yuzhmash to Russians.

WHAT IS THE MISSILE?

Putin described "Oreshnik" as a hypersonic ballistic missile. He mentioned that it travels at 10 times the speed of sound, making it impossible to intercept. According to Russian sources, the missile has a range of 5,000 km, enabling Russia to target most of Europe and the west coast of the United States. It is believed to be equipped with multiple independently targetable re-entry vehicles, each containing separate warheads capable of striking different targets. Anatoly Matviychuk, a Russian military expert, suggested that the missile could potentially carry six to eight conventional or nuclear warheads and is likely already in operation, as stated by Yuri Podolyaka, a well-known Ukrainian-born pro-Russian military blogger. The Pentagon stated that Russia launched a missile based on the "RS-26 Rubezh" intercontinental ballistic missile. U.S. had been informed of the launch via nuclear risk reduction channels.

WHAT DID UKRAINE REPORT?

According to Ukraine's air force, Russia launched an ICBM towards Dnipro, but the United States disputed this claim. ICBMs are categorized as having a distance exceeding 5,500 km. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy described a Russian assault using a novel form of ballistic missile as a "obvious and serious escalation" and urged global denunciation.
