Donald Trump selects Pam Bondi for attorney general following Matt Gaetz's withdrawal.
Pam Bondi has been a close ally of Donald Trump and previously served as one of his attorneys during his initial impeachment trial.
US President-elect, Donald Trump, announced the nomination of Pam Bondi, former Florida attorney general, as the next US attorney general on Thursday. This decision came shortly after Matt Gaetz removed himself from consideration. Pam Bondi's nomination was made after the initial selection for attorney general, Republican Matt Gaetz, withdrew following an ongoing federal sex trafficking investigation against him.
"While the momentum was strong, it is evident that my confirmation was unfairly becoming a distraction to the critical work of the Trump/Vance Transition," stated Gaetz.
"There is no time to waste on a needlessly protracted Washington scuffle, thus I'll be withdrawing my name from consideration to serve as Attorney General," he added. In a social media post, it was mentioned that he will continue to advocate for the country but from a different role.
Who is Pam Bondi?
Pam Bondi is a close ally of Donald Trump and served as one of his attorneys during his initial impeachment trial. This trial involved accusations of attempting to secure US military aid to Ukraine in exchange for an investigation into the then-Vice President Joe Biden. She has also led the America First Policy Institute, which was founded by former Trump administration members.
Hailing from Tampa, Pam Bondi was Florida's first female attorney general and has 18 years of experience working as a prosecutor.
