At least 50 people were killed when gunmen opened fire in northwest Pakistan.

Gun attack in Kurram district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, where sectarian clashes between Sunni and Shiite Muslims have occurred.

Massacre in Pakistan as gunmen targeted passenger vehicles carrying Shiite Muslim civilians on Thursday. At least 50 people were killed, with 20 others injured. The assault is among the most deadly in the area lately, as per police, news agency PTI disclosed. 

The insurgents ambushed the cars in the Kurram district of unstable Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province neighboring Afghanistan, where there have been lethal sectarian conflicts between Sunni and Shiite Muslims in the past few months. No organization has taken credit for the attack yet. The convoys of vehicles were en route from Parachinar to Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, when assailants began shooting, according to officials. Rescue authorities reported that 50 individuals, comprising of eight women and five children, were rescued while 20 others lost their lives in the assault. According to them, the majority of the victims were from the Shia community. 

According to a local journalist, the vehicles were attacked in areas controlled by the Taliban. According to local media reports, there were more than 200 vehicles in the convoy. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Khan Gandapur criticized the attack and instructed a group, consisting of the provincial law minister, local lawmakers, and the chief secretary, to travel to Kurram promptly and evaluate the situation.

 He instructed officials to create a Provincial Highways Police unit to guarantee the safety of all roads in the province. Gandapur offered condolences to the grieving families and pledged financial aid for the families of the victims. Targeting unsuspecting civilians is very sorrowful and deserving of strong disapproval. "He stated, as quoted by PTI, that those responsible for this incident will face the consequences of the law."
