Opposition expresses apprehension regarding one nation, one election: ‘Unrealistic and anti-democratic’

Congress MP Jairam Ramesh stated that the party is seeking for the bill to be forwarded to a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC).

On Thursday, Opposition leaders expressed their concerns pertaining to the Narendra Modi administration’s intention to introduce the ‘one nation, one election bill’ aimed at executing simultaneous elections throughout India during the current winter session of Parliament.

While members from the ruling party and its affiliates expressed support for the initiative, numerous leaders and MPs from the Opposition questioned the initiative.

Congress Lok Sabha representative K Suresh remarked that his party has already articulated its position clearly, opposing simultaneous elections. "From the outset, our party has articulated its position, which remains unchanged. We are against it. The entire opposition stands against it," he mentioned.

Congress MP Jairam Ramesh remarked that the party is advocating for the bill to be sent to a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC).

"The bill will be submitted in Parliament, and we are requesting that it be referred to the JPC. The INC's position was articulated clearly last year by party president Mallikarjun Kharge when he dispatched a four-page letter to the committee established by former President Ram Nath Kovind regarding One Nation One Election..."

Syria's newly appointed Prime Minister al-Jolani affirms rights protected for all faith communities

Syria's newly appointed Prime Minister al-Jolani affirms rights protected for all faith communities

HTS chief Abu Mohammed al-Jolani announced that no officials engaged in the torture of detainees will be granted amnesty. The newly established prime minister from Syria indicated that the Islamist coalition responsible for the removal of president Bashar al-Assad will ensure the rights of every religious community and encouraged the millions who have escaped the conflict to return to their homeland.

Assad departed from Syria following a swift campaign led by the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and its partners, marking a dramatic conclusion to over fifty years of oppressive governance by his family.

Celebrations erupted among Syrians domestically and internationally, after enduring a suffocating period during which those perceived as dissenters could face imprisonment or execution.

With Assad's removal casting Syria into an uncertain future, the nation’s new authorities have attempted to reassure the members of Syria’s various religious minorities that they will not face oppression. They have also committed to seeking justice for those wronged by Assad's harsh regime, with HTS leader Abu Mohammed al-Jolani pledging on Wednesday that officials responsible for the torture of detainees will face no forgiveness. As reported by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, approximately half a million individuals have been incarcerated since the onset of the war, with an estimated 100,000 losing their lives due to torture or deplorable conditions of confinement.

"We will not forgive those who have tortured detainees," stated Jolani, now known by his actual name Ahmed al-Sharaa, calling upon "nations to surrender any of those criminals who may have escaped so they can face justice."

Tokyo government introduces 4-day workweek to support families during low birth rates

Tokyo government introduces 4-day workweek to support families during low birth rates

The Tokyo government plans to establish a four-day work week for its personnel to promote young families and elevate the nation’s historically low birth rates. Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike revealed that employees of the metropolitan government will be permitted to take three days off each week starting in April.

“With adaptability, we will reassess work approaches to guarantee that no one is compelled to sacrifice their career due to life circumstances such as childbirth or childcare,” she mentioned in a policy address during the fourth regular session of the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly.

In a period when Japan’s birth rate has reached an unprecedented low, this new initiative aims to motivate couples to become parents. As per the Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare, despite the government’s intensified measures to encourage the youth to establish families, the rate dropped to merely 1.2 children forecasted per woman throughout her lifespan last year. For the population to remain stable, that number needs to be no less than 2.1. Koike also revealed an additional policy that would enable parents of primary school-aged children to swap a portion of their salary for the privilege to leave work early.

“In these challenging times for the nation, Tokyo must take the lead in protecting and enhancing the lives, livelihoods, and economy of our citizens,” she continued. According to the Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare, Japan recorded only 727,277 births last year. The prevalent culture of overtime work in Japan, which often compels women to choose between career aspirations and motherhood, could be a contributing factor to this scenario.

Data from the World Bank indicated that last year, the gender gap in the country's workforce participation stood at 72% for men and 55% for women, surpassing figures seen in other affluent nations.

Section 498A being exploited to coerce husband into yielding to wife’s unreasonable requirements: Supreme Court

Supreme Court highlights rising exploitation of Section498A for ‘personal revenge’

This is a section where approximately 95% of the reported cases are fabricated.. instances have been observed where cases were lodged a year after the woman vacated her marital residence; solely for the purpose of intimidating her husband & his family.

In light of the ongoing discourse surrounding the suicide of Bengaluru-based software engineer Atul Subhash, the Supreme Court has established an eight-point framework to ascertain the amount of alimony. It is claimed that Subhash took his own life due to pressure from his wife and in-laws regarding financial matters.

Prior to ending his life, Atul created an 80-minute video accusing his estranged wife Nikita Singhania and her family of extortion and intimidation. He also wrote a 24-page suicide note denouncing the justice system.

As reported by Live Law, a bench from the apex court consisting of Justices Vikram Nath and Prasanna B Varale has outlined guidelines for determining the final alimony sum in a divorce scenario involving a Hindu couple.

The husband (appellant) and wife (respondent) were married for six years and maintained separate residences for nearly twenty years. The husband asserted that the wife was excessively emotional and detached from his family, whereas the wife countered with claims of mistreatment.

Below are the eight criteria identified by the top court to be taken into account while determining alimony.

•Circumstances of the parties, both social and economic.

•Essential requirements of the wife and their dependent children.

•Individual qualifications and job statuses of the parties involved.

•Any independent income or property possessed by the applicant.

•Level of lifestyle experienced by the wife within the matrimonial residence.

•Any employment sacrifices made in light of familial obligations.

•Reasonable legal expenses for a non-working wife.

•Financial capability of the husband, including his income, maintenance duties, and debts.

While the apex court recommended that all other courts adhere to these guidelines for determining a permanent alimony amount, it emphasized that the factors mentioned “do not constitute a rigid formula but serve as guidelines for determining permanent alimony.”

The court remarked that the permanent alimony sum ought to be determined in a way that neither punishes the husband nor compromises a decent living standard for the wife.

A complaint has been registered at the Marathahalli police station based on the report presented by Atul’s sibling, Bikas Kumar, against four individuals, including Atul’s wife Nikita Singhania, under sections 108 (Instigation of suicide) and 3(5) (When a criminal act is performed by multiple individuals in pursuit of a common objective) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

The FIR has been lodged against Nikita Singhania, her mother Nisha Singhania, brother Anurag Singhania, and uncle Sushil Singhania. The police are expected to issue summons to all the accused, requiring their presence for questioning.

According to the FIR, the accused fabricated false charges against Atul and sought ₹3 crore to resolve the dispute. The FIR further mentions the claim that Nikita was requesting ₹30 lakh for permitting Atul to visit their son.

One Nation, One Election’ bill expected to be presented in ongoing Winter Session

One Nation, One Election’ bill expected to be presented in ongoing Winter Session

The proposal enabling concurrent Lok Sabha elections and state assembly votes is a priority for the Narendra Modi administration.

On Thursday, the Union cabinet sanctioned the 'One Nation, One Election' Bill. According to sources, this legislation may be introduced during the current Winter session of Parliament. The bill will subsequently be forwarded to the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC).

The initiative to permit simultaneous Lok Sabha elections and state assembly voting remains a key focus for the government.

In September, the Union cabinet ratified the recommendation outlined in a report submitted by a high-level committee led by former President Ram Nath Kovind.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the initiative, stating, "The Cabinet has endorsed the High-Level Committee's suggestions regarding Simultaneous Elections."

"I commend our past President, Shri Ram Nath Kovind Ji, for leading this initiative and engaging with an extensive array of stakeholders. This represents a significant move towards enhancing our democracy's vibrancy and inclusiveness," PM Modi expressed on X.

The influential committee proposed the execution of unified elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies as an initial phase, followed by coordinated local body elections to occur within 100 days.
