One Nation, One Election’ bill expected to be presented in ongoing Winter Session
The proposal enabling concurrent Lok Sabha elections and state assembly votes is a priority for the Narendra Modi administration.
On Thursday, the Union cabinet sanctioned the 'One Nation, One Election' Bill. According to sources, this legislation may be introduced during the current Winter session of Parliament. The bill will subsequently be forwarded to the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC).
The initiative to permit simultaneous Lok Sabha elections and state assembly voting remains a key focus for the government.
In September, the Union cabinet ratified the recommendation outlined in a report submitted by a high-level committee led by former President Ram Nath Kovind.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the initiative, stating, "The Cabinet has endorsed the High-Level Committee's suggestions regarding Simultaneous Elections."
"I commend our past President, Shri Ram Nath Kovind Ji, for leading this initiative and engaging with an extensive array of stakeholders. This represents a significant move towards enhancing our democracy's vibrancy and inclusiveness," PM Modi expressed on X.
The influential committee proposed the execution of unified elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies as an initial phase, followed by coordinated local body elections to occur within 100 days.
