THAAD Battery Configuration

The precise arrangement of the THAAD battery presently located in Israel remains ambiguous, yet a unit of this type can consist of as many as nine transporter-erector-launchers, each equipped with eight interceptors, a long-range AN/TPY-2 X-band radar system, a mobile command and control center designed for fire control, along with various supporting apparatus. Additional interceptors will also be accessible for reloading the launchers throughout a combat deployment. This represents a terminal missile defense system, signifying its capability to neutralize short-, medium-, and intermediate-range ballistic missiles during their terminal phases as they plunge through the atmosphere toward their intended targets.

In the context of Israel's defense, the THAAD stands as one of the premier air defense systems within the nation capable of executing terminal phase missile defense; it is complemented by systems such as David’s Sling and Arrow 2. Recently, Israel has phased out its Patriot surface-to-air missile batteries that were equipped for terminal missile defenses. The ability to intercept missiles during their terminal phase via land-based systems can be enhanced by stationing U.S. Aegis-equipped naval vessels armed with SM-6 missiles in proximity to the Israeli coastline. Furthermore, Israel possesses a strong mid-course intercept capability through the Arrow 3 system, and the same U.S. Navy ships armed with SM-3s can additionally contribute to this capability.

The U.S. Army operates seven THAAD batteries that have experienced a number of short and extended deployments in the past. Apart from the one currently positioned in Israel, there are two other units that are forward-deployed: one in Guam and another in South Korea.

Although Thursday marked the first occasion on which the U.S. Army employed the system to counter an imminent threat, it is worth noting that the UAE utilized its THAAD system to intercept a Houthi ballistic missile aimed at an oil installation near Al Dhafra Air Base, which was accommodating U.S. and French forces alongside Emirati personnel at the time of the assault in January 2022. Visit here to read TWZ’s previous coverage of that intercept.
