Donald Trump Promises Execution For 'Rapists, Murderers, Monsters'
Joe Biden had instituted a halt on the federal death penalty but faced mounting pressure to take additional measures before his departure from the White House on January 20.
On Tuesday, Donald Trump criticized Joe Biden for commuting the sentences of nearly all American federal inmates on death row, as the president-elect prepares to succeed the Democrat in the White House.
In his final month as president, Biden revealed on Monday that he would convert the sentences of 37 out of 40 federal inmates facing execution to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
Among those affected were nine individuals convicted of killing fellow inmates, four for homicides committed during bank robberies, and one who took the life of a prison officer.
"Joe Biden just commuted the Death Sentence on 37 of the worst killers in our Country," Trump wrote on Truth Social, his social media network.
"When you learn about the deeds of each, you will be astonished that he did this. It’s illogical. Family members and friends are increasingly heartbroken. They can’t comprehend that this is occurring!"
Biden had put a pause on the federal death penalty yet was pressured to make further decisions prior to his exit from the White House on January 20, especially with indications from Republican Trump that he intended to reinstate the practice.
Although Biden condemned the inmates he spared and their “abhorrent actions,” he stated that he was guided by “my conscience and my experience” to prevent the subsequent Trump administration from resuming executions.
However, he excluded three individuals from his directive—one of the assailants from the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, a shooter who killed 11 Jewish congregants in 2018, and a white supremacist responsible for the murder of nine Black churchgoers in 2015.
Trump assured that he would instruct the Justice Department to "actively pursue the death penalty to safeguard American families and children from violent rapists, murderers, and monsters."
"We will once again be a Nation of Law and Order!" he concluded.
