Prime Minister Narendra Modi speaks in the Lok Sabha during the discussion on the 'glorious journey of 75 years of the India Constitution

Modi Critiques Congress for Dismantling the Constitution Over 7 Decades

Once again, PM Modi pointed out the Congress figures from Nehru to Rahul for their disregard toward the Constitution, referencing the Emergency era and blatant political opportunism, while contrasting the amendments made by the BJP government as advantageous for the nation. On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared that the Congress has consistently disrespected the Constitution, with five generations of its leaders attempting to belittle and weaken the esteemed document for political expediency and appeasement politics, severely criticizing the primary opposition party for what he termed the irreversible offense of enforcing the Emergency and eroding constitutional liberties. As he concluded a two-day special discourse in the Lok Sabha celebrating 75 years of the Constitution, Modi also differentiated the constitutional alterations initiated by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from those of the Congress, asserting that the opposition party has a historical opposition to reservations, lauding the accomplishments of his administration, emphasizing that his welfare initiatives are directed by the Constitution, and articulating 11 commitments to transform India into a developed nation by 2047, coinciding with the hundredth anniversary of Independence.

During an extensive address in Hindi lasting 110 minutes, the PM frequently targeted the Congress and the Gandhi lineage, criticizing it for the most significant “jumla”, or untrue promise, of “Garibi Hatao” (eliminate poverty)—a campaign slogan that played a significant role in Indira Gandhi’s overwhelming success in the 1971 elections. He further stated that his government has continually endeavored to fortify the unity and integrity of the country—an essential issue that motivated the authors of the Constitution.
