Donald Trump, expected to return to the White House in January, has ignited concerns in Kyiv that he might compel Ukraine to agree to a peace settlement beneficial to Moscow. 

On Thursday, Russian Federation President Vladimir Putin expressed his willingness for discussions with US President-elect Donald Trump at "any time," lamenting that he did not initiate Moscow's full-scale military offensive sooner.

Trump, set to make his return to the White House in January, has advocated for the start of negotiations, heightening Kyiv's fears that he may pressure Ukraine into accepting peace terms that favor Moscow.

During his annual news conference at the end of the year, the 72-year-old leader declared that his forces dominated the battlefield.

His comments came as Kyiv reported that Russian assaults on northeastern Ukraine had resulted in three fatalities, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky engaged in discussions with European Union leaders in Brussels.

Putin articulated his statements with confidence yet had to concede that he was unaware when Russia would reclaim the areas of the Kursk region currently controlled by Kyiv since August. The time-honored yearly question-and-answer sessions are mostly a televised event, but they also serve as a unique opportunity for Putin to face some challenging inquiries.

Putin addressed the audience for nearly four and a half hours.

In response to questions about Trump’s overtures concerning a potential peace agreement, Putin indicated that he would be open to a discussion with the incoming Republican leader.

"I have no idea when I will meet him. He hasn’t offered any statements regarding it. I haven’t conversed with him for more than four years. I am certainly prepared for it. Any time," Putin remarked.

"If we ever arrange a meeting with President-elect Trump, I am confident we will have an abundance to discuss," he noted, adding that Russia is prepared for "negotiations and compromises." 

Kursk offensive 

For months, Russian forces have been progressing in eastern Ukraine, with Putin continually emphasizing their capabilities on the battlefield.

However, when a woman from the Kursk region inquired when residents might return to their homes, after numerous individuals were evacuated from battlefront zones during the Ukrainian offensive, Putin stated he was unable to provide a timeline.

"We will undoubtedly expel them. Undoubtedly. There’s no other alternative. Nevertheless, regarding a specific date, I apologize, I cannot provide that information right now," he responded.

Additionally, Putin faced inquiries about the economic challenges facing Russia, including the repercussions from a significant increase in military expenditure and severe labor shortages resulting from the ongoing conflict.

He maintained that the situation was "stable, despite external pressures," highlighting low unemployment rates and industrial expansion.

The number of fatalities in the boat accident that occurred near the Gateway of India in Mumbai on Wednesday evening has increased to 14, according to the BMC.

"The fatality count in the incident involving the 'Neelkamal' passenger boat capsizing following a collision with a Navy vessel near the Gateway of India has climbed to 14, as an additional body has been retrieved by the rescue teams. The names of the deceased have not yet been confirmed," reported the BMC.

Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi, the Chief of the Indian Navy, together with all members of the Indian Navy, has conveyed condolences to the families of those who perished in the boat incident that resulted in 14 fatalities in Mumbai Harbour on Wednesday.

In a statement on X, the Navy spokesperson indicated that the Navy has also expressed hopes for the rapid recovery of those injured.

"Adm Dinesh K. Tripathi, CNS, and all members of the Indian Navy extend their sincere condolences to the mourning families of those who sadly lost their lives in the tragic incident in Mumbai Harbour and wish for a quick and complete recovery for those who have been hurt. Two individuals from the ferry are still reported missing, and Search and Rescue operations are being conducted by eight Navy vessels and a naval helicopter, supported by a Coast Guard ship. Search and Rescue activities have been ongoing throughout the night of December 18-19, 2024, in the area surrounding the accident. A Board of Inquiry has been initiated to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident," the Navy spokesperson stated on X.

The Winter Session of Parliament is set to conclude today, encapsulating four weeks filled with intense drama, sharp exchanges, and even allegations of 'attempt to murder' directed at the Opposition, with an additional wave of protests anticipated on the final day.

It is expected that the government will introduce the 'One Nation, One Election' bill today, aiming to create a Joint Parliamentary Committee consisting of 27 Lok Sabha members and 12 Rajya Sabha members, as the Winter Session wraps up on a tumultuous note.

In recent weeks, continuous interruptions and demonstrations have been evident, with the latest deadlock leading to a police case against Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition, following a complaint lodged by the BJP concerning two of its members sustaining injuries during a protest at the Parliament's Makar Dwar.

The Congress party—which has lodged its own complaint claiming that party leader Mallikarjun Kharge was harmed after being pushed by BJP members—has characterized the case against Mr. Gandhi as a "badge of honour." Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal remarked, "A case against him for upholding Babasaheb's legacy is a badge of honour."

BJP members Pratap Sarangi and Mukesh Rajput, who are currently hospitalized, sustained injuries during concurrent protests emanating from the Treasury and Opposition sides outside the parliament.

These demonstrations were triggered by Union Home Minister Amit Shah's remarks in the Rajya Sabha, asserting that mentioning BR Ambedkar's name had become a "fashion"—an assertion deemed "insulting" by the Opposition. Mr. Shah stated, "It has become a fashion to say Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar. Had they invoked God's name so often, they would have secured a place in heaven."

While Mr. Shah has accused the Opposition of misrepresenting facts and utilizing edited footage, the Congress and Trinamool Congress have initiated a privilege motion against him, demanding his resignation.

Mr. Shah has denied any intention to resign, claiming it would not resolve the issues faced by the Congress. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has supported him, alleging that the Congress employs "malicious falsehoods to conceal their misdeeds."
