Colombia changes its stance on US deportation flights following Donald Trump’s tariff demands; US halts sanctions.
The Colombian authorities confirmed they will maintain communication with the United States, stating their intention to establish agreements that uphold the fundamental dignity of those being deported.
On Sunday, Colombia reversed its earlier position regarding the acceptance of deported citizens from the US, after refusing to permit flights in response to Donald Trump introducing sanctions.
This initial refusal led the Trump administration to enforce tariffs and other retaliatory actions against Colombia. Since Trump took office last week, reports about deportation flights from the US have been prominent in the news.
Yielding to Trump’s threat of tariffs, Colombian President Gustavo Petro organized the use of a presidential aircraft to ensure the “dignified return” of Colombian citizens who were being deported, according to a statement from the President’s office.
“The Government of Colombia, led by President Gustavo Petro, has made the presidential plane available to assist in the dignified return of our fellow citizens scheduled to arrive this morning on deportation flights. This action aligns with the Government's dedication to ensuring respectful conditions. Under no circumstance have Colombians, as citizens and rights holders, been or will be exiled from Colombian territory,” the statement expressed.
The statement regarding "Indian DNA" made by Indonesia’s President Prabowo Subianto had the room, including President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in laughter during a dinner gathering on Sunday. He made this lighthearted comment while discussing his ties to India.
"Recently, I underwent genetic sequencing and DNA testing, which revealed that I possess Indian DNA. It’s well-known that Indian music gets me dancing," he remarked, causing much laughter among those present. He further noted, "India and Indonesia share a profound, historic bond. Our civilizations are interlinked, with a significant portion of our vocabulary derived from Sanskrit. Numerous Indonesian names are rooted in Sanskrit, and the remnants of ancient Indian culture have a notable impact on our daily lives. This connection may even be part of our heritage."
Furthermore, Mr. Subianto expressed admiration for Prime Minister Modi’s initiatives in poverty alleviation and support for the underprivileged, mentioning that he has gained valuable insights during his short stay.
"I am truly honored to be in India... I do not consider myself a professional politician or an accomplished diplomat; I speak honestly. Though my visit is brief, I have learned immensely from Prime Minister Modi’s leadership and dedication... His efforts in reducing poverty, supporting the marginalized, and aiding the most vulnerable in society are greatly encouraging to us," he stated.
Conveying wishes for "wealth, tranquility, and excellence" to the populace of India, Mr. Subianto expressed his hope for continued strong relations and friendship between Indonesia and India.
