The enormous bunker-buster utilized by the US at Fordo. Iran

GBU-57, or the Massive Ordnance Penetrator bomb, at Whiteman Air Base in Missouri.

13,000 kg, extends 60 m into the ground prior to detonation: The enormous bunker-buster utilized by the US at Fordo.

US President Donald Trump announced that military airstrikes have been conducted on three locations in Iran, indicating a notable escalation in the ongoing tensions with Israel.

These airstrikes targeted a vital uranium enrichment facility, Fordo, which had not been impacted by previous Israeli operations and is thought to play a crucial role in Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

Situated 300 feet under a mountain, Fordo is allegedly where Iran has attempted to enrich uranium for weaponization and gather the enriched material.

Trump mentioned in a post on Truth social that “a complete load of bombs” was deployed against Fordo.

The most effective method for Israel to neutralize the Fordo facility required a bomb produced in the US, which is so heavy that only a US B2 Spirit bomber can deliver it. The latest attack appears to have accomplished this objective, although the level of damage inflicted on Fordo remains uncertain.

The bomb utilized by the US on Fordo is referred to as the GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrator, or MOP. It has been engineered to target “deeply-entrenched facilities and fortified bunkers and tunnels”, specifically aimed at demolishing targets within secure installations. Israel, along with any other nations apart from the US, lacks bombs capable of reaching such depths as Fordo.

The GBU-57 MOP

The MOP is approximately 20.5 feet long and 31.5 inches wide, weighing about 13,000 kg, as per the US Air Force.

It is designed to penetrate up to 60 m of soil before detonating. The warhead is encased in a specialized high-performance steel alloy, which is intended to allow it to bear a significant explosive load while preserving the integrity of the penetrator casing upon impact, according to an Air Force fact sheet.

The depth of the Fordo site is around 90 meters. It remains unclear how extensive the destruction from the bombings at Fordo has been.

The GBU-57 was developed by aerospace manufacturer Boeing, and as reported by CBS, it was contracted to produce 20 of these devices by 2015, according to the Air Force.

Israel and Iran confrontation: On Friday, the Israeli defense forces announced that they launched strikes on multiple sites in Tehran overnight, utilizing over 60 fighter jets as the discord between the two rival nations reached its eighth day.

The Israeli armed forces disclosed that the operation targeted what they termed a facility for the “research and development of Iran’s nuclear armament program.”

“More than 60 fighter jets engaged several military locations in Iran with around 120 weapons,” stated the Israel Defense Forces in a report.

In addition, the Israeli military noted in their announcement that they had "carried out a range of strikes in central Tehran: various military targets were hit, including missile manufacturing locations and the headquarters of the SPND (Organization of Defensive Innovation and Research) involved in studying and advancing Iran's nuclear arms initiative." The Israeli military characterized the SPND headquarters as a site “dedicated to the research and advancement of sophisticated technologies and weaponry that enhance the military strength of the Iranian government.”

Trump seeks military installations from Munir, proposes security-trade agreements amid US-Pakistan relationship reset: Report

According to a report, during a discussion with Pakistani Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir, US President Donald Trump requested military installations and access to ports in return for advanced fighter jets, increased financial assistance, and new security and trade agreements.

The report indicates that Trump aims for a reciprocal arrangement with Pakistan to renew diplomatic ties between both nations.

On Wednesday, Trump had a working lunch with Field Marshal Asim Munir, where he later expressed that it was an “honor” to meet him, referring to Munir as a “clever” individual.

Although a working lunch may seem uneventful, this meeting could signify a significant shift in the US-Pakistan alliance, as Trump sought to gain access to Pakistan's military bases and ports in return for state-of-the-art military equipment, according to CNN-News 18.

Historically, Pakistan has been an ally of the United States, contributing significantly during the Cold War and in the conflicts in Afghanistan. However, the US-Pakistan bond deteriorated under the previous Biden administration, as Biden notably did not engage with his Pakistani counterpart over four years.

Currently, Trump seems to be re-engaging with Pakistan at a time when his rapport with India has begun to decline. He has not only continued to baselessly claim that he facilitated the ceasefire between India and Pakistan and attempted to involve himself in the Kashmir issue, but he has also imposed strict conditions in ongoing trade discussions, which undermine the initial collaborative spirit of the negotiations.
